Queens fall in OWHA play

April 10 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters Bantam AA Queens run at the Ontario Women's Hockey Association provincial championships in Toronto came to an end Saturday as they fell 3-0 to the top ranked Whitby Wolves.

Sydney Isbell was outstanding in the Thunder Bay net despite the loss.

With the setback the Queens were eleminated from further play thus ending their successfull season, which included three tournament titles, falling in overtime in the championship game of another while also going unbeaten in the Queens Showcase Weekend.

OWHA provincials day one update

April 9 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters Bantam AA Queens began play at the Ontario Women's Hockey Association provincial championships in Toronto Friday with a tie and hard-fought loss heading into day two action Saturday.

Thunder Bay opened up play skating to a 4-4 tie with the Kitchener Lady Rangers and then suffered a hard fought 1-0 setback to the Markham-Stouffville Stars.

Against Kitchener Jessica Gazzola paced the Queens attack tallying twice and dishing out an assist.

Cassandra Curtis and Brooke Boquist supplied the other markers. Farrah Nicholl also chipped in with a pair of helpers.

Sydney Isbell was outstanding in goal for the Queens in the loss to the Stars.

Thunder Bay wraps up round-robin play Saturday morning against the Whiby Wolves and will need to win and hope Kitchener defeats Markham-Stouffville to have any hope of advancing to the playoff round.

Golden moment in dramatic fashion

March 22 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens have returned from the inaugural Lake Superior Cup tournament in Ashland, Wis., winning the gold medal in dramatic fashion after defeating the Green Bay Bobcats with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory.

Jessica Gazzola, who had an outstanding weekend for the Queens, opened the scoring with a wonderful individual effort at 12:42 of the seond period.

Green Bay would answer back with the equalizer at 8:40 of the third setting the stage for extra time.

With just 20 seconds remaining in sudden death overtime, Kaley Tienhaara dashed in from the right side and lifted a backhand shot over top the Green Bay goaltender to give the to Queens the title.

Sydney Horst was stellar in goal making 22 saves to register the win for Thunder Bay.

The Queens will now prepare for the Ontario Women's Hockey Association provincial championships, which take place April 9-11 in Mississauga.

Queens advance to final in Ashland

March 20 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens are heading to the championship game of the inaugural Lake Superior Cup tournament taking place in Ashland, Wis.

In a tune-up for the event the Queens took on the Green Bay Bobcats U14AAA squad in an exhibition match prior to the start of the tourney and came away with a 2-1 victory.

Bronwyn Bolduc opened the scoring in the first period before Green Bay would tie the contest.

The game appeared to be headed for a tie, but Jessica Gazzola notched the game-winner with less than a minute to play.

Sydney Horst and Sydnet Isbell shared the net minding duties in the win.

Kicking off the tournament Thunder Bay continued their winning ways skating past the Wisconsin Junior Badgers U-16 Tier 2 team by a 5-4 score.

The Queens would jump out to a 3-0 first period lead lead on markers going to Gazzola, Kaley Tienhaara and Brooke Boquist.

Drue Ahola and Boquist's second of the game provided the margin of victory while Horst earned the win in net.

Thunder Bay then booked their place in the title game by defeating the Keweenah Storm U-16 Tier 2 side from Houghton, Mich., 2-0.

Gazzola would open the scoring finishing off a a nice goal-mouth feed from Tienhaara before Bolduc iced the victory with an empty netter with 45 seconds remaining.

Isbell was stellar in goal in registering the shutout.

The Queens will now prepare for the championship game Sunday morning in a re-match against Green Bay.

Queens fall in semifinal

Feb. 13 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens came up just short in semifinal action at the Tournament of Champions in Brandon, Man., falling 4-3 to the Regina Ravens.

Regina jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the contest was seven minutes old only to see Bronwyn Bolduc get the Queens on the board with the assists going to Brooke Boquist and Farrah Nicholl.

Thunder Bay would tie it later as Drue Ahola tipped in a point shot from Azia Vass.

The Ravens took the lead again at 8:09 of the third Regina only to see Boquist pull the Queens even two minutes later.

However, Regina would pot the game-winner, on the power play, with just 1:16 remaining to advance to Sunday's final against the St. Vital Victorias.

Ahola earned player of the game honours for her side.

The Queens next out of town action will be in mid-March when they travel to Ashland, Wis., where they will face the U-14AA Green Bay Bobcats, the Wisconsin Badgers U-16 squad and the Houghton, Mich. U-16s.

Queens advance to semifinal

Feb. 13 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens have advanced to the semifinal of the Tournament of Champions in Brandon, Man., finishing round robin play with a 3-0 record.

Thunder Bay advanced earned the semifinal berth after defeating the Pembina Trail Twins 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Bronwyn Bolduc opened the scoring 2:49 into the contest finishing off a feed from Drue Ahola.

Jessica Gazzola upped the lead to 2-0 with an assist going to Farrah Nicholl putting the club up a pair heading into the third period.

Pembina would cut the deficit to one early in the final frame, but Gazzola's second of the game restored the two-goal cushion just over a minute later.

Kaley Tienhaara made it 4-1 striking shorthanded before Gazzola completed her hat-trick notching another marker while her side was down a player while also earning team player of the game honours in the process.

The Twins added a late goal to round out the scoring.

Sydney Horst made 13 saves to pick-up the win.

Pair of shutouts to start in Brandon

Feb. 12 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens posted a pair of shutouts Friday for a successful start at the Tournament of Champions in Brandon, Man.

In game one they opened up with a 9-0 whitewashing of the Selkirk Fishermen and followed that up with a narrow 1-0 victory over the St. Vital Victorias.

Brooke Boquist led the way in the win over Selkrik firing a hat-trick and adding a pair of assists for a five-point game.

Other offensive support was supplied by Cassandra Curtis, who tallied twice, while single markers went to Drue Ahola, Marielle Orr, Kaley Tienhaara and Bronwyn Bolduc. Sydney Horst would post the shutout in goal for Thunder Bay.

Against St. Vital, the Queens rode the 24-save performance of Sydney Isbell who was outstanding in keeping the Victorias off the score sheet.

Bolduc's goal at 11:28 of the first period stood up to be the game-winner with Ahola drawing the lone assist on the play.

Next up for the Queens will see them take on the Pembina Trail Twins Saturday at 1:45 p.m. CT as they look to advance to the tournament semifinal later that evening.

Overtime setback in lcebreaker final

Jan. 17 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens suffered a tough 3-2 setback in overtime Sunday in the championship game of the St. Luke's Icebreaker Invitational Tournament in Duluth, Minn.

The Queens would open the scoring midway through the first period as Brooke Boquist converted on a power play opportunity with assists going to Michelle Carlson and Tessa Langen. 

Wayzata countered with two quick markers to take a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

Following a scoreless middle frame Drue Ahola would feed Boquist for her second of the game with three minutes left in regulation to force extra time.

With the two sides playing three-on-three in the overtime Wayzata scored the game-winner with 1:26 remaining to give them the crown.

Sydney Isbell was stellar between the pipes for Thunder Bay in the tough defeat and made several outstanding saves to keep the game close.

It marked the fourth straight tournament the bantam AA side has reached the final, winning two of them.

Next up on the tourney trail for the Winning Streak Charters Queens will be the Victoria Inn Tournament of Champions, which will be held in Brandon, Man., in mid-February. Thunder Bay is the defending champion of that event.

Queens win pair in advancing to final

Jan. 16 -- A pair of victories by the Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens Saturday helped them advance to the championship game of the St. Luke's Icebreaker Invitational Tournament in Duluth, Minn.

In their opening game on Saturday the Queens skated past Edina, Minn. 5-1 and followed that up with an exciting 3-2 triumph over Blaine, Minn.

After a scoreless first period vs. Edina Marielle Orr got Thunder Bay on the board early in the second striking at the 18 second mark.

Edina rebounded to tie the game just over a minute later, but Brooke Boquist notched the eventual game-winner before the middle frame was out.

The Queens took control in the third on markers by Tessa Langen, Kaley Tienhaara and Bronwyn Bolduc.

Sydney Isbell earned the victory in goal highlighted by several key saves.

Moving on to the divsional final against Blaine Thunder Bay faced a stiff test and came out on top.

Jessica Gazzola opened the scoring at the nine minute mark of the first period on a nice individual effort.

The Bengals then struck with two quick markers to take a 2-1 lead only to see Gazzola score again to knot at 2-2 after the second stanza.

Boquist would then pot her second game-winner of the day once as she took the opening faceoff to start the third period, skated down and scored at the 13 second mark.

Sydney Horst was outstanding between the pipes to earn the victory for Thunder Bay in this one.

The Queens move on to face Wayzata, Minn., in the title game at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday as they defeated No. 1 ranked Roseau, Minn., 2-1 in a shootout to book their place in the final.

Queens roll in tournament opener

Jan. 15 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Centennial Cougars of Minneapolis Friday in their opening game of the St. Luke's Icebreaker Invitational Tournament in Duluth, Minn.

Leading the team offensively was Brooke Boquist who supplied a four-point night on a pair of goals and two helpers.

Jessica Gazzola also tallied twice in the win while single markers went to Tessa Langen, Kaley Tienhaara and Marielle Orr.

Sydney Horst and Sydney Isbell shared the shutout in the Thunder Bay net.

The Queens next game sees them facing off with Edina, Minn., at 1 p.m. Saturday in a divisional semifinal contest.


Queens perfect 3-0 in Showcase

Dec. 14 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens finished off a perfect weekend at the Queens Showcase held at Fort William First Nation Arena with an unbeaten 3-0 record.

Playing up an age level in the midget A division of the event the bantam AA side opened with an impressive 7-1 triumph over Marathon.

Brownwyn Bolduc tallied twice and Sydney Isbell recorded the win to lead the club in that one.

They jumped out to big first period lead scoring five times, including Bolduc's pair, while Michelle Carlson, Kaley Tienhaara and Drue Ahola had the others.

Marielle Orr and Cassandra Curtis notched the other markers to round out the scoring.

Game two saw the squad blank the Marquette Iron Rangers 3-0.

Sydney Horst secured the shutout in that contest while Bolduc, Farrah Nicholl and Azia Vass scored the goals and Bolduc, Drue Ahola and Jessica Gazzola picked up assists.

In their finale they took on Marathon for a second time and blew open a close game with five third period goals to support the shutout goaltending of Sydney Horst.

Gazzola tallied twice for the Queens while single markers came off the sticks of Curtis, Nicholl, Tienhaara, Brooke Fogolin and Miranda Mellerup.

The victories extended the club's current winning streak to 14 games that has included recent tournament titles in Edina, Minn., and Grand Forks, N.D.

Queens capture North Dakota tourney

Dec. 7 -- The Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens have won their second tournament in as many weeks as they captured the Grand Forks Angels event in Grand Forks, N.D., Sunday with a 2-0 shutout over the Winnipeg Rangers in the championship game.

Brooke Boquist potted the eventual game-winning goal while Sydney Horst posted the shutout stopping all 23 shots she faced.

"The girls battled hard against an equally talented team from Winnipeg and came out winners," said Queens head coach Bill Nicholl. "Sydney Horst made some huge saves to win that game," he added.

Thunder Bay's other marker came off the stick of Jessica Gazzola as they celebrated tournament titles for the second week in succussion. They were also crowned champs at the Cake Eaters Classic in Edina, Minn., the weekend before.

The club will now gear up for the Thunder Bay Queens Showcase Weekend Dec. 11-13 at Fort William First Nation Arena.

Queens advance to final in North Dakota

Dec. 5 -- The Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens are moving on to the final of the Grand Forks Angels tournament in Grand Forks, N.D.

They captured their berth in the title game by virtue of a 4-1 victory over Bemidji, Minn., on Saturday.

Jessica Minoletti, Jessica Gazzola, Brooke Boquist, and Marielle Orr all scored for Thunder Bay in the win.

The Queens will play the championship game Sunday at 1:45 p.m. CT against an unknown opponent in a contest that will be played at Ralph Engelstad Arena, the home of the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux hockey programs.



6-2 win to open North Dakota event

Dec. 4 -- The Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens are off to a good start at the Grand Forks Angels tournament in Grand Forks, N.D.

In their opening game at the event on Friday the Queens dumped the Fargo Lightning 6-2.

Jessica Gazzola tallied twice for Thunder Bay while single markers were provided by Drue Ahola, Marielle Orr, Bronwyn Bolduc, and Cassy Curtis.

The club's next game goes at 6:15 p.m. CT on Saturday vs. either Bismarck, N.D. or Bemidji, Minn.

Queens off to North Dakota

Dec. 1 -- Fresh off capturing the Cake Eaters Classic this past weekend in Edina , Minn., the Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens will go in search of another crown this weekend as they take part in an eight-team Grand Forks Angels tournament in Grand Forks, N.D.

The Queens open up play Friday at 3 p.m. CT when they meet Fargo, N.D.

On Saturday their opponent will either be Bismarck, N.D. or Bemidji, Minn., with the game being played either at 10 a.m. or 6:15 p.m.

They will also have a match-up Sunday against a yet to be determined opponent with the start time depending on where they stand after their first two contests.

Should they advance to the championship game, it will be played at 1:45 p.m. CT at the 11,634-seat Ralph Engelstad Arena, which is the home of the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux hockey teams.

Queens crowned Cake Eaters Classic champions

Nov. 29 -- The Winning Streak Charters Bantam AA Queens are champions of the Cake Eaters Classic in Edina, Minn., for a second year in a row.

Their latest triumph came Sunday when they dumped the Centennial Cougars 6-1 in the title game.

Bronwyn Bolduc paced the Thunder Bay attack with two goals while Marielle Orr, Brooke Boquist, Kaley Tienhaara and Michelle Carlson supplied singles.

Sydney Isbell was solid in net picking up the win.

The Queens return to action next weekend when they travel to North Dakota to take part in the Grand Forks Angels tournament.

Queens advance to Cake Eaters Classic final

Nov. 29 -- The Winning Streak Charters Bantam AA Queens are off to the championship game of the Cake Eaters Classic in Edina, Minn.,

They cruised through round robin play with a perfect 3-0 record finishing up with an 11-1 victory over Stillwater, Minn.

Marielle Orr paced the Thunder Bay attack firing a hat-trick while Brooke Boquist and Bronwyn Bolduc both tallied twice.

Other markers went to Azia Vass, Michelle Carlson, Jessica Gazzola and Jessica Minoletti.

Moving on to the semifinals the Queens blanked Osseo-Maple Grove, Minn., by a score of 7-0.

Minoletti scored twice in the win with Boquist, Gazzola, Bolduc, Brooke Fogolin and Drue Ahola notched the others. Goaltender Sydney Horst posted the shutout.

The Queens will now face Centennial Cougars in the final on Sunday afternoon as they look to capture the Cake Eaters Classic title for a second consecutive year.


2-0 start at Cake Eaters Classic

Nov. 27 -- The Winning Streak Charters Bantam AA Queens have gotten off to a 2-0 start at the Cake Eaters Classic in Edina, Minn.,

Thunder Bay opened up with a 6-0 victory over Minnesota Centennial Black and followed that up by topping highly-touted Minnetonka 2-1. 

Brooke Boquist was the offensive spark plug for the Queens in day one.

She fired a hat-trick in the opener while Kelsey Henry,  Kaley Tienhaara and Jessica Minoletti supplied single markers.  Sydney Isbell posted the shutout in goal. 

Against Minnetonka Boquist tallied again on a nice individual effort while Minoletti buried the the game-winner. 

Sydney Horst was in net for the win. 

The Queens final round robin game goes Saturday at 12 p.m. CT vs. Stillwater, Minn.

Queens gear up for Cake Eaters Classic

Nov. 24 -- The Winning Streak Charters Bantam AA Queens will be on the tournament trail this weekend as the club travels to Edina, Minn., to compete in the 6th annual Cake Eaters Classic Nov. 27-29.


In Edina a total of 12 clubs are competing in the bantam division with the Queens opening up play Friday morning at 9:45 a.m. CT when they take on Minnesota Centennial.

They will follow that up with a match-up vs. Minnetonka at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Round robin action for the Queens concludes Saturday at noon when they meet Stillwater, Minn.

The three division winners and a wild card team advance to the semifinals on Sunday.

Queens pick-up silver medal in Duluth

Oct. 25-- The Winning Streak Charters Bantam AA Queens returned home from the Radisson Cup in Duluth, Minn., capturing the silver medal. 

Thunder Bay opened up with a 9-4 victory over the Duluth Ice Hounds.

Brooke Boquist led the way firing a hat-trick while Jessica Gazzola chipped with two goals and a pair of helpers. Marielle Orr, Kaley Tienhaara, Tessa Langen and Brooke Fogolin supplied singles.

Next up saw the Queens fall to the Minnesota Rush by a score of 7-2.

Jessica Gazzola and Tienhaara tallied for the Queens.

Game three in Duluth saw the Queens book a place in the final when they edged the Minnesota Rink Rats 3-2.

Azia Vass, Kelsey Henry and Tienhaara supplied the goals for Thunder Bay.

Moving on to the championship game the Queens once again faced the stronger Minnesota Rush squad and fell 7-2.

Tienhaara continued her impressive weekend scoring both Queens goals.

Next up for the Bantam AA Queens will be the Cake Eaters Classic in Edina, Minn.

That tourney goes Nov. 27-29 and the Queens are the defending champions of that event.
