Queens return from Icebreaker Invitational with silver medal

Jan. 16 -- The Thunder Bay Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens have returned home from the Icebreaker Invitational tournament in Duluth with the silver medal after dropping a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Wayzata, Minn., in the championship game that eventually required a shootout to decide a winner.

Samantha Isbell put the Queens ahead 1-0 just five minutes into the final on an assist by Emily Oleksuk.

Wayzata responded with a tying goal in the opening frame and jumped ahead 3-1 in the second period before Oleksuk scored an unassisted goal with minutes left in the middle stanza.

Karli Nummikoski tied the game early in the third period, assisted by Claire Sandelovich. The Queens outshot Wayzata 29-17 overall.

Despite dominating in the sudden-victory 3-on-3 session, Thunder Bay was unable to score so the two teams headed to a shootout to determine a champion.

Wayzata would notch the only goal in extra shots to give them the title.

Brooke Basaraba suffered the tough loss in net for the Queens.

The club advanced to the championship game on the strength of three solid round-robin games.

They skated to a 5-3 triumph over Cottage Grove in their opener.

Whitney Scott opened the scoring for the Queens at 7:09 of the first period, assisted by Karli Nummikoski.

Their opponents would tie it at 12:53 as the two sides were deadlocked after one.

Scott put the Queens ahead at 1:07 of the second with an unassisted effort.

Cottage Grove would again knot the score only to see Lydia Johnson finish off the work Kayla Koevoet to put Thunder Bay back on top.

The final session saw Koevoet score with assists from Allison Pages and Courtney Latta and she added yet another in the late going to secure the victory.

Megan Joseph-Seeley was strong in net for the Queens in picking up the win.

In their second contest, which was against Elk River, the team held a large shots on goal advantage, but it was the opposition who scored one their first shot of the game to go up 1-0.

Nummikoski would finally get the Queens on the board striking with just 17 seconds remaining in the second period.

Thunder Bay would put the game away in the third thanks to efforts from Claire Sandelovich, Oleksuk and Samantha Isbell.

The Queens then punched their ticket to the final defeating Centennial 6-0.

Joseph-Seeley earned the shut-out while markers were recorded by Koevoet, Sarah Doyle, Isbell, Johnson, Nummikoski and Scott.
