OWHA provincials wrap

April 11 -- The Thunder Bay Ontario Power Generation midget A Queens competed in the Ontario Women's Hockey Association provinicial championships over the weekend playing three very closely contested games, but not advancing to the playoff round.

In the club's opener the squad battled to a 2-2 draw with the Whitby Wolves with Karly Vis scoring both goals for Thunder Bay.

Game two saw the Queens drop a hard fought 2-1 decision to the Brampton Canadettes. Danna Fullum had the lone marker for her side in that affair.

Needing a win or tie in their final round-robin game to advance to the playoff round the Queens season came to an end as they could not solve the Aurora Panthers goaltender as they were edged 1-0.

Crunch time for Kitt

April 4 -- A long-time player in the Thunder Bay Queens organization is being given an opportunity to move on and play a higher level.

Haley Kitt, who plays defence and is in her fifth year with the Queens, has been offered a spot to play for the elite Minnesota Crunch under-19 program next season.

This is Kitt's third campaign with the Ontario Power Generation Midget A Queens. She has served as team captain this season and has won gold and silver medals at the provincial level for Thunder Bay when she played bantam hockey.

The Crunch are based in Grand Rapids, Minn.

Fire on Ice tournament wrap-up

March 22 -- The Thunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens returned from the Fire on Ice tournament in Hayward, Wis., over the weekend with a second place finish.

The club opened the tourney with a 5-0 triumph over the Burnett Blizzard.

Gabrielle Erickson and Karly Vis both tallied twice in the victory while Danna Fullum supplied a single.

Next up saw Thunder Bay take on the Rochester Rockets where they dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision.

Katie Friday and Jessie Kitt were the goal scorers in that one.

Despite the loss the Queens still managed to advance to the championship game of the tourney based upon a better tournament points ratio.

In the final the squad met the Minnesota Rush and were defeated 4-1.

Fullum had the lone goal for her side in that one.

The team did come away with some additional hardware from the event with both ends of the event shootout competition by virtue of scoring the most goals along with t
he combined efforts of goaltenders Emily Ongaro and Carlie Pennock who gave the Queens the Top Goalie honours for the competition.

The Midget A Queens will now gear up for the Ontario Women's Hockey Association provincial championships next month in Mississauga.

OPG Queens off to Wisconsin

March 19 -- The Thunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens are off to Wisconsin this weekend to take part in the Fire on Ice uner-19 Elite tournament in Hayward.

The club opens up action Saturday afternoon against the Wisconsin Blizzard and wrap up the day when they meet the Rochester Rockets that night.

Their opponent on Sunday will be determined by the results of those first two contests.

The Queens will be using this event as a preparation for the OWHA provincial championships April 9-11 in Toronto.

OPG Queens bring home the gold

Feb. 16 -- The Thunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens were impressive as they did not allow a goal in three games while bringing home the gold medal from the Winter Face-off Classic in Maple Grove, Minn., over the weekend.

They opened up the tourney by blanking White Bear Lake 9-0 and followed that up by shutting out the Fargo All Stars 5-0, which in turn gave the squad a bye to the finals. 

In the title contest they took on the host Maple Grove side and skated away with a 5-0 victory.

Karly Vis led the Thunder Bay attack in the championship game firing a hat-trick while Gabrielle Erickson and Hayley Kitt supplied the other markers and Carlie Pennock posted the shut out in net. 

The next our of town action for the OPG Queens will be in mid-March when they travel to Hayward, Wis., to compete in the Fire on Ice tournament.

OPG Queens impressive in reaching final

Jan. 16 -- The Thunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens put on a pair of impressive performances Saturday to reach the championship game of the Brookings Rangers U-19 Showcase tournament in Brookings, S.D.

In their tourney opener Thunder Bay rolled to a 10-0 win over the Rushmore Thunder and followed that up by dumping the Fargo Lightning 8-0.

Against Rushmore Emily Ongaro earned the shutout in net while Danna Fullum, Carly Vis and Gabrielle Erickson all chipped in offensively with two goals apiece.

Single markers went to Bree Hollinsworth, Katie Mapledoram, Megan Stajkowski and Alyssa Westerback.

In the Fargo match-up
Stajkowski tallied twice in the victory while Vis, Hollinsworth, Erickson, Fullum, Carly Ross and Lauren Haskell all chipped in with a marker each.

The Queens now move on to face the host Brookings Rangers in the championship on Sunday, which gets underway at 12 p.m.

OPG Queens victorious in tournament tune-up

Jan. 15 -- The Thunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens skated to a 6-3 victory Friday over the Brookings Rangers in a pre-tournament contest in Brookings, S.D.

Karly Vis tallied three times for the Queens in the triumph while Alyssa Westerback, Katie Friday and Gabrielle Erickson supplied singles. Carlie Pennock earned the win in net.

Actual tournament play gets underway Saturday in the South Dakota community with Thunder Bay's first action coming at 12 p.m. when they take on the Rushmore Thunder.

OPG Queens go unbeaten in Showcase

Dec. 14 -- TheThunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens had a successful Showcase Weekend going unbeaten in three games.

They began the event with an impressive victory rolling to a 9-0 win over Marathon.

Danna Fullum and Megan Stajkowski led the way with two goals apiece while Karly Vis had a big game of her own by registering four assists.

Bree Hollinsworth, Allyssa Westerback, Gabrielle Erickson, Jessie Kitt and Hayley Kitt supplied singles tallies.

Game two saw the Queens edge the visiting Marquette Iron Rangers 2-1.

Lizzi Vanderwey's goal midway through the third period proved to be the winner.

Bree Hollinsworth had the other Thunder Bay marker while Megan Stajkowski chipped in with a pair of assists.   

Carlie Pennock picked up the win between the pipes for Thunder Bay.

In the club's finale they met Marquette one more time with the two sides battling to 1-1 draw.

Carly Ross scored for the Queens on an assist by Carly Vis.

Pennock started in goal for the local side and was rewarded with her performance with game star laurels.

OPG Queens blanked in semifinal

Nov. 9 -- TheThunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens appearance at the Ice Breaker Cup in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., came to an end Sunday in semifinal action.

They would go on to fall 3-0 to the host Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats in that game, who would go on to capture the tournament championship.

OPG Queens head to semifinals at Ice Breaker Cup

Nov. 7 -- Facing a must-win situation Thunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens came through and have earned a semifinal berth at the Ice Breaker Cup taking place in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Taking on the Hearst Ice Cats Thunder Bay picked up a key 2-0 victory to move on to one semifinal game, which goes Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. vs. the host Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats.

Danna Fullum and Lauren Haskell supplied the goals, Carly Ross and Haylet Kitt provided assists while Carlie Pennock recorded the shutout.

The Queens dropped a 2-1 decision to the Wildcats in round-robin play on Saturday.

Danna Fullum had the lone goal for Thunder Bay with Karly Vis and Nicole Salminen picking up the assists.

In their final round-robin match the Queens fell again by a 2-1 score to a club from Traverse City, Mich.

Katie Friday set-up Alyssa Westerback for the only OPG marker.

Queens drop opener at Ice Breaker Cup

Nov. 6 -- It was a tough start for the Thunder Bay OPG Midget A Queens at the Ice Breaker Cup tournament in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

The Queens were not able to get on track in their opener as they would go on to lose to the Sault Ste. Marie G-Force 3-0.

Thunder Bay will look to bounce back Saturday with a pair of contests.

They'll take on the Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats at 10:30 a.m. then meet Traverse City, Mich. at 3 p.m.
