Sportop Queens 2-1 in MinneapolisNov. 29--The Sportop MidgetAA Queens completed day two of tournament action in Minneapolis with a win and a loss.
In the first game versus the Wisconsin Wild the Queens opened the scoring on a goal by Courtney Tougas with assists going to Kathleen Bortuzzo and Kylie Cornell.
The Wild would tie the game with one10th of a second left in the 2nd period.
Wisconsin jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the third before the Queens tied it on a power play goal by Kaitlyn Quarrell.
Wisconsin scored the winner late in the third to defeat the Queens 3-2.
Katherine Tustian played strong in goal despite the loss, stopping 19 of 22 shots.In game three the Queens defeated Culver Academy in an exciting 1-0 game on a late goal by Kathleen Bortuzzo set-up by Tougas.
Amanda Makela played strong in net to get the shutout stopping 25 shots.
The Queens face the Westman Wildcats (Winnipeg) for 5th place on Sunday morning.
Sportop Queens open tourney with winNov. 28--Sara Brady scored twice as the Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens opened play Friday at the Minnesota Thoroughbreds tournament in Minneapolis on a winning note as they doubled up Detroit Victory 4-2.
After Detroit opened the scoring early in the first period Brady would pull Thunder Bay level after the opening frame.
Victory Honda Detroit took another lead in the middle frame, but Brady equalized once again later in the period.
Kathleen Bortuzzo buried the eventual game-winner in the third period with a power play goal while Courtney Tougas sealed the game with a late effort.
Amanda Makela stopped 27 of 29 shots to record the win in goal for the Queens.
Two more round robin games Saturday see the side facing off against the Wisconsin Wild and Culver Academy.
Sportop Queens blank Midget A counterpartsNov. 9--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens skated to a 4-0 win over the Midget A Queens Sunday at Neebing Arena.
Kylie Cornell and Kaitlyn Quarrell both had a goal and an assist in the victory while Courtney Tougas and Brittany Zuback also tallied in the victory.
Marnie Robinson and Juliah Vanderwey had assists.
Queens tie South End RangersNov. 4--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens skated to a 4-4 tie with the South End Rangers bantam boys side on Tuesday.
Courtney Tougas fired a hat-trick to lead the Queens offensively while Jana Henry added the other goal.
Ellia Heroux, Kaitlyn Quarrell and Kathleen Bortuzzo chipped in with assists.
Queens take home third place trophyNov. 3--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens have returned home the Shattuck-St. Mary's Invitational in Faribault, Minn., winners of the third place trophy after defeating the Wisconsin Wild 2-0 on Sunday.
A pair of second period goals by Courtney Tougas and Brittany Zuback was all the offense the Queens would need as Amanda Makela posted her second consecutive shutout making 13 saves. The Queens fired 22 shots at the Wild.
In all, the Queens went 2-0-2 in the tournament, scoring 13 goals while only allowing four.
They will now resume their play in the Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association Bantam AA loop and prepare for the upcoming Minnesota Thoroughbreds tournament in Minneapolis later this month.
Two ties and a win for Queens to start tourneyNov. 2--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens have started unbeaten at the Shattuck-St. Mary's Invitational in Faribault, Minn.
The Queens opened with a pair of of 2-2 ties vs. the Dallas Stars and host SSM Sabres on Saturday.
In game one the Queens outshot the Dallas Stars 23-11 but could only secure a 2-2 tie on goals by Kaitlyn Quarrell and Courtney Tougas. Quarrell also had an assist. Katherine Tustian got the tie in net for the Queens.In game two the Queens took on the highly-rated and undefeated U-16 Shattuck St. Mary's Sabres and jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the strength of goals by Kylie Cornell on a Brittany Zuback assist and Elia Heroux set up by Jana Henry.
On Sunday Tustian had 13 saves in a 5-0 shutout of the Notre Dame Hounds.
The Sabres then fought back with two goals eventually tying the Queens in second period, but the two teams played a scoreless third period for the draw.
The Queens were outshot by a 39-18 margin with Amanda Makela playing strong in the game to preserve the tie.
Kathleen Bortuzzo paced the Thunder Bay attack scoring twice and assisting on two others.
Quarrell, Tougas and Julia Vanderway were the other goal scorers while Brittany Zuback chipped in with a pair of helpers.
The Queens finished second in their division one point behind the Shattuck-St. Mary and were scheduled to play for the bronze medal against the Wisconsin Wild on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
Sportop Queens off to Shattuck-St. Mary's InvitationalOct. 29--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens are off to Faribault, Minn., this weekend to take part in the Stattuck-St. Mary's Invitational tournament Nov. 1-2.
They'll begin play Saturday against the Dallas Stars U-16 side at 7:45 a.m. and will follow that up with a 3 p.m. contest on the same day vs. Shattuck-St. Mary's U-16
The Queens will then take Notre Dame on Sunday at 8 a.m. and will wrap-up play at 1:30 p.m. against a yet to be determined opponenent.
North Dakota tourney ends with lossOct. 12--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens dropped their final game at the Ice Palace Tournament in Grand Forks, N.D., on Sunday falling 2-0 to the Pembina Valley Golden Wings.
Amanda Makela stopped 22 of 24 shots in the loss. The set back left the Queens with a fourth place finish out of six teams with a 1-3 record.
The Queens will now get ready for a trek to Faribault, Minn. to compete in the Shattuck-St. Mary's Invitational at the end of the month.
Queens drop two games in ND tournamentOct. 11--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens lost two close games Saturday at the Ice Palace Tournament in Grand Forks, N.D.
They dropped a 3-1 decision to the Weyburn Golden Wings on Saturday morning with Brittany Zuback scoring the lone Thunder Bay goal with an unassisted effort.
Amanda Makela made 21 saves in the loss in a game that saw the Queens muster 14 shots.
In evening action, the Queens fell 4-1 to the Pembina Valley Hawks.
Kathleen Bortuzzo scored on an assist from Sara Brady in a game that saw them out shoot their opponents 32-24.
The team wraps up play Sunday vs. the Assinaboine Park Rangers.
Queens open with win in North DakotaOct. 10--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens opened the Ice Palace Tournament in Grand Forks, N.D., Friday evening with a hard fought 1-0 win over the Regina Rebels.
Courtney Tougas scored the winner on a power play a minute into the third period on assists by Kathleen Bortuzzo and Sarah Brady.
Katherine Tustian was solid in goal in posting the shutout. The Queens were out shot 18-13 in the defensive battle.
The Queens continue play on Saturday with games against the Weyburn Goldwings and the Pembina Valley Hawks.
Sportop Queens off to North Dakota tourneyOct. 9--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens travel to Grand Forks, N.D., this weekend to compete in the Ice Palace AAA tournament, which goes Oct. 10-12.
Game action for the club begins Friday as they take on the Regina Rebels at 7 p.m. CT.
Two games are on the Queens schedule Saturday. They play the Weyburn Penta Gold Wings at 8 a.m. CT and follow that up when they meet the Pembina Valley Hawks at 7:30 p.m. CT.
The team's schedule on Sunday depends on how they finish in round robin play.
Assiniboine Park and the Westman Wildcats are the other two competing squads in the six-team event.
Sportop Queens finish 1-1-3 at St. Cloud showcase eventSept. 29--The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens finished with a very respectable 1-1-3 record at the St. Cloud State University Showcase Invitational event in St. Cloud, Minn.
They opened play Friday against the Minnesota Ice Cats U-19 team skating to a 3-2 victory backed by a stellar 33-save performance by first-year netminder Amanda Makela.
Sarah Brady & Brittany Zuback had a goal and an assist in the win while Kaitlyn Quarrell had the other Queens marker. Kathleen Bortuzzo also chipped in offensively with two assists.
Game two in St. Cloud saw another strong goaltending performace as Katherine Tusitan made 33 stops helping her club get a 2-2 tie vs. the Wisconsin Wild.
Ellia Heroux recorded a goal and an assist for the Queens with Lauren Haskell notching the other marker.
Saturday evening the Queens tied 2-2 once again as they played the Minnesota Northern Starz.
In their first game on Sunday they battled to another draw, this time 3-3 with the Minnesota Crunch from Grand Rapids, Minn.
Courtney Tougas led the way for the Queens scoring all three goals for her side while Tustian turnd aside 19 of 22 shots fired her way.
Following a quick turn around between games the Queens dropped a 3-1 decision to the Madison Capitols.
Sara Brady had the lone Thunder Bay goal in this one with assists going to Bortuzzo and Juliah Vanderwey. Makela was saddled with the loss facing 32 shots.
The Sportop Queens will now gear up for their next out of town event as they travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to compete in the Ice Palace AAA tournament Oct. 10-12.
