Sportop Queens crowned Stoney Creek Showcase champions

Sept. 11 -- Brianna Iazzolino's goal at the 5:19 mark of the first period stood up to be the game-winner as the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens blanked the Mississauga Chiefs 2-0 Sunday in the championship contest of the Stoney Creek Sabres Showcase tournament in Hamilton.

A Michela Cava marker early in the final frame provided some insurance for the Sportop side while Megan Leikkari shut the door the entire way making 12 stops to register the shutout.

The Queens advanced to the title game after defeating Team Pittsburgh 5-1 in semifinal action and blanking the Toronto Aeros 3-0 in quarterfinal play earlier on Sunday.

Against Pittsburgh, the midget AA squad broke open a 1-1 tie with four unaswered tallies en route to victory.

After Samantha Strassburger opened the scoring for Thunder Bay, Katie Matheny knotted the contest before Jessica Gazzola buried the eventual game-winner late in the first period.

Kaitlyn Tougas, Natasha Nicholl and Cava added later makers to round out the scoring.

Jayde Turcotte faced 16 shots in the triumph.

In the quarterfinal win over Toronto, it was Cava, Drue Ahola and Bronwyn Bolduc who found the back of the net while Leikkari posted another shutout making 17 saves.

Thunder Bay went a perfect 7-0 in the 40-team event outscoring their opponents by a 28-4 margin, including five shutouts.

The next out of town tournament for the Sportop Queens will be the St. Cloud State Fall Classic in Minnesota Sept. 24-25.
