Sportop Queens crowned Showcase champions

Dec. 11 -- An Azia Vass goal with 8:19 remaining was the difference as Thunder Bay edged Shattuck-St. Mary's to capture the midget AA championship.

Following a scoreless opening period Kaley Tienhaara put the Queens on the board 10:16 into the middle frame.

The Sabres' Brooke Boquist would pull her side level with just 19 seconds remaining in that second stanza.

Megan Leikkari would shut the door the rest of the way in the Thunder Bay net backstopping the Queens to the title.

1--Midget AA: Sportop Queens 4 Eastman 0— The second shutout of day one came minutes after the first as Megan Leikkari shut the door on the Eastman Selects.

Thunder Bay got a three-goal, one assist performance by captain Michela Cava in the win. Kaitlyn Tougas added the other effort for the Queens

2--Midget AA: Sportop Queens 3 Shattuck-St. Mary's 0— Megan Leikkari registered her second consecutive shutout backstopping Thunder Bay to the triumph over the Sabres, who are based in Faribault, Minn.

Natasha Nicholl potted the eventual game-winner with 53 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.

A pair of third period tallies from Jillian Langtry and Kaley Tienhaara added some insurance. Kaitlyn Tougas chipped in with a pair of assists for the Queens.

Taylor Crosby suffered the setback in goal for Shattuck-St. Mary's.

3--Midget AA: Sportop Queens 2 Winnipeg 0— A third straight shutout for Thunder Bay as they advanced to Sunday's championship game in the midget AA division.

Jayde Turcotte recorded the blanking for the Queens who improved to 3-0 and have yet to allow a goal on the weekend.
