2011 Queens Showcase Game Recaps

GAME 1--Bantam A: Triad Queens 1 Taranis Queens 0– The Triad Contracting peewee Queens started the Showcase on a winning note defeating the Taranis Contracting bantam A Queens 1-0 in a hard-fought battle staged Tuesday evening.

Following two scoreless periods, Amanda Pages would notch the eventual game-winner in the middle of the 3rd frame finishing off the work of Emily Varrin and Alyssa Cicigoi, who drew assists on the play. Aden Johnson posted the shutout for the peewees.

GAME 2--Bantam A: Dryden 3 Fort Frances 2— Shelby Tourond tallied twice in the third period as Dryden rallied from a one-goal deficit to edge Fort Frances. Anika Tardiff added the other Dryden goal.

Madisyn DeGagne Averi King notched power play markers for the Fort in the loss.

GAME 3--Midget A: OPG Queens 2 James Bay 1— Midget A action began with the OPG Queens of Thunder Bay posting a narrow victory over the James Bay Ice Cats.

Cassy Curtis and Marielle Orr gave the home side a two-goal lead after two periods of play. Stephanie Ayres replied for James Bay 5:32 to go, but that's as close as they would get as the Queens captured the win in their Showcase opener.

GAME 4--Midget A: WSC Queens 6 Schreiber 2— Playing up an age-level the Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens scored five third period goals en route to the triumph over Schreiber.

The two sides were deadlocked at 1-1 after two periods with Samatha Isbell striking for the Queens and Crystal Roen converting for the North Shore.

Thunder Bay would take control in the third notching those five markers in a 13-minute span courtesy of two tallies by Lydia Johnson, who also added an assist, while Sarah Doyle, Karli Nummikoski and Whitney Scott added singles. Harley Wilson had the other Schreiber goal, which came in the final minute.

GAME 5--Bantam A: Hearst 2 Taranis Queens 1— Natasha Bosnick's goal with 11:05 remaining was the difference as Hearst slipped by the Taranis Queens.

Alessa Dalcourt gave the Ice Cats the lead early in second period only to see Monica Browczuk notch the equalizer with 44 seconds to go in the middle session.

GAME 6--Bantam A: Triad Queens 2 Dryden 1—The peewee Queens improved to 2-0 at the Showcase after posting the narrow victory over the Sunset Granite Snipers.

Madeline Brwoczuk struck 30 seconds into the contest to put Thunder Bay on top, but Dryden would pull level later in the stanza thanks to Anika Tardiff's power play effort at 11:17.

Following a scoreless middle period, the Queens' Tia Lampo would fire home the game-winner at 3:19 finishing off the work of Hanna Johnston who drew an assist.

GAME 7--Midget A: OPG Queens 6 Schreiber 1—The OPG Queens got goals from six different skaters and moved to 2-0 in midget A play with the triumph over Schreiber.

Alyssa Westerback, Karly Vis, Marielle Orr, Bradie Butler, Cassy Curtis and Taylor Basaraba all found the back of the net for Thunder Bay. Vis also dished out a pair of helpers for a three-point game.

Dayle Chouinard had the lone tally for the North Shore who dropped their second game of the day.

GAME 8--Midget A: WSC Queens 5 James Bay 2—The WSC Queens picked up their second victory of the Showcase in defeating James Bay, who slipped to 0-2.

Karli Nummikoski, with a pair, Kayla Koevoet Claire Sandelovich and Allison Pages scored for Thunder Bay while Emily Oleksukchipped in with two assists.

GAME 9--Midget AA: Shattuck-St. Mary's 3 Winnipeg 0— The Sabres got goals in each period and kept Winnipeg off the score sheet in posting the first shutout of the Showcase.

Ryan Little tallied twice for Shattuck while Sloan Sullivan fired the other marker in the victory.

GAME 10--Midget AA: Sportop Queens 4 Eastman 0— The second shutout of day one came minutes after the first as Megan Leikkari shut the door on the Eastman Selects.

Thunder Bay got a three-goal, one assist performance by captain Michela Cava in the win. Kaitlyn Tougas added the other effort for the Queens

GAME 11--Bantam A: Triad Queens 3 Fort Frances 1— The Triad peewee Queens improved to 3-0 in bantam A division play with a two-goal victory over Fort Frances.

Scoring for Thunder Bay were Karadyn Kiviaho, with a pair, and Alyssa Cicigoi. Aden Johnson picked up the win in net.

Jessica Coran had the lone goal for the Fort while Shanleigh Fryer was in net.

GAME 12--Bantam A: Hearst 2 Dryden 0— The final game of day one was yet another shutout as Hearst improved to 2-0 with the win in bantam A division play.

Kayla Jacques did not allow a goal in the Ice Cats' net while Natasha Bosnick fired home both markers for Hearst in the victory.

Saturday, Dec. 10

GAME 13--Midget A: James Bay 7 Schreiber 1— A four-goal third period helped the Ice Cats break open a close game as they went on to defeat Schreiber North Shore.

Lola Blais and Melodie Pominville scored in the first period while Kaitlyn Roen replied for Schreiber.

After Jessica Carroll made it 3-1 after two periods of play the Ice Cats put the game away in the final frame getting markers from Holly Lalande, Ciji Fortier, Stephanie Ayres and another by Carroll en route to victory.

Jessica Audet was the winning goaltender while Taylor Wellbourne was in net for the North Shore.

GAME 14--Midget A: OPG Queens 2 WSC Queens 0— An all-Queens match-up saw the midget A side come out on top by virtue of two third period goals that proved to be the difference.

Neither Allanah Dzijacky for the OPG Queens or Megan Joseph-Seely in the bantam AA net would allow anything to get past them during the first two periods of play.

Finally Taylor Basaraba broke open the scoreless draw with 11:32 remaining notching the eventual game-winner. Riley Cronk added a late insurance marker to round out the scoring.

GAME 15--Bantam A: Hearst 3 Fort Frances 0—Jessica Plamondon picked up the shutout as Hearst defeated Fort Frances.

The opening period was scoreless, but the Ice Cats got tallies from Renee Levesque and Pascale Dumais to go up 2-0 after two.

Natasha Bosnick added another in the final stanza to conclude the scoring.

Kate Parsons was the starting goaltender for Fort Frances.

GAME 16--Bantam A: Dryden 4 Taranis Queens 3—Rachel Getson's second goal of the game, coming in the second period proved to be the game-winner as Dryden edged Thunder Bay in bantam A action.

Getson opened the scoring for Dryden while Jenna Langlais and Emma Arsenault added the others.

Scoring for the Queens were Jacqueline Desimone with two with Jordyn Paris supplying a single.

Jackie Grandmont picked up the win between the pipes for the Sunset Granite Snipers. Renee Plummer was in net for Thunder Bay.

GAME 17--Midget AA: Eastman 3 Winnipeg 1— The Selects got a pair of goals from Haley Vandepoele and another from Kylee Schettler as they skated past their Manitoba counterparts.

Kayla Karbonik would dash Sydnee Kellsey's shutout bid with 35 seconds remaining to account for the lone Winnipeg marker.

Brenna McNulty was in net for the Ice.

GAME 18--Midget AA: Sportop Queens 3 Shattuck-St. Mary's 0— Megan Leikkari registered her second consecutive shutout backstopping Thunder Bay to the triumph over the Sabres, who are based in Faribault, Minn.

Natasha Nicholl potted the eventual game-winner with 53 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.

A pair of third period tallies from Jillian Langtry and Kaley Tienhaara added some insurance. Kaitlyn Tougas chipped in with a pair of assists for the Queens.

Taylor Crosby suffered the setback in goal for Shattuck-St. Mary's.

GAME 19--Midget A: Semifinal—WSC Queens (2nd round robin) 6 James Bay (3rd round robin) 3— The Queens punched their ticket to Sunday's final with the victory over James Bay in semifinal action.

Each team would score in the opening period with Kayla Koevoet converting for Thunder Bay while Callie Paddock replied for the Ice Cats.

The two sides exploded for six goals in the middle frame including four by the Queens.

Claire Sandelovich had two of the tallies and Whitney Scott along with Allison Pages had the others.

Melodie Pominville and Kelsey Boivin picked up the goals for James Bay.

Brooke Basaraba earned the win between the pipes and Natasha Lyons was the Ice Cats' netminder.

GAME 20--Midget A: Semifinal—OPG Queens (1st round robin) 9 Schreiber (4th round robin) 1— The OPG Queens made sure it would be an all-Thunder Bay final in the midget A bracket as they rolled over the North Shore in the second semifinal.

Karly Vis paced the Queens' attack with three goals and an assist. Riley Cronk tacked on two tallies of her own while singles went to Jessica Minoletti, Haleigh Croves, Serena Daniels and Cassy Curtis.

Harley Wilson responded for Schreiber.

Thunder Bay goaltender Sydney Isbell recorded the victory.

GAME 21--Bantam A: Hearst 2 Triad Queens 0—
With both teams already assured of meeting in the championship game of the bantam A division, it was Hearst who came out on top in a preview of the final, backed by the shutout goaltending of Kayla Jacques.

Following a scoreless opening frame the Ice Cats would notch the game-winner in the final minute of the second stanza thanks to Camille Sigouin's effort.

Alessa Dalcourt added some insurance late, scoring with 10 seconds remaining.

Alyssa Aho was in net for the Queens.

GAME 22--Bantam A: Taranis Queens 1 Fort Frances 1— Round robin play in the bantam A division wrapped up with Fort Francis and the Taranis Contracting Queens skating to a 1-1 draw.

Sara Smith opened the scoring for Thunder Bay only to see Madisyn DeGagne notch the equalizer for the Leafs midway through the contest.

Queens' goalkeeper Callie Bevilacqua and her Fort Frances counterpart, Shanleigh Fryer, shut the door the rest of the way in what was the first tie at the Showcase.

As both clubs finished with equal records following round robin play, it was Thunder Bay that would advance to meet Dryden in the third place game Sunday, by virtue of the goals for and against tiebreaker.

GAME 23--Midget AA: Eastman 2 Shattuck-St. Mary's 2—The two sides skated to a 2-2 tie in their final round robin contest.

As that also left them tied in the standings, the tie breaker was needed to determine who would move on to the final and who would play for bronze, it was the Shattuck-St. Mary's advancing allow one fewer goal.

That would leave Eastman having to settle to skate in the third place game Sunday at 10 a.m.

GAME 24--Midget AA: Sportop Queens 2 Winnipeg 0—A third straight shutout for Thunder Bay as they advanced to Sunday's championship game in the midget AA division.

Jayde Turcotte recorded the blanking for the Queens who improved to 3-0 and have yet to allow a goal on the weekend.

They will now meet Shattuck-St. Mary's in the title contest Sunday at 11 a.m.

GAME 25--WWHL: Minnesota 11 Manitoba 1— It was all Minnesota in this WWHL contest as the Whitecaps blasted the Maple Leafs.

Jessica Tyra and Brooke White-Lancette made it 2-0 after one period of play.

The Whitecaps made it 6-1 after 40 minutes on markers from Jodi Holland, Winny Brown, White-Lancette and Amy Stech.

Jocelyne Larocque would reply for Manitoba with their only goal.

Minnesota blew it open in the final frame thanks to a pair of markers from Allie Thunstrom along with singles from Amanda Trunzo, another by Holland while White-Lancette finished off a hat-trick.

Sunday, Dec. 11

GAME 26--Bantam A: Third place—Taranis Queens 5 Dryden 4 (Shootout)— Paige Sullivan's goal in the shootout was the difference as the Taranis Contracting Queens earned the bronze medal against a tenacious Dryden squad that rallied late to force extra shooters.

Sullivan had a tremendous game for Thunder Bay notching a hat-trick in regulation while Sara Smith supplied the other marker.

Emmy Arsenault and Rachel Getson had the first two tallies for Dryden who then struck twice in the final two minutes to force the shootout.

Elizabeth Carter fired the first one with 1:45 to go and Darra Zieroth notched the equalizer with 37 seconds remaining.

Getson would add the lone Dryden effort in the shootout while Jacqueline Desimone had the other for the Queens.

Callie Bevilacqua picked up the win in net for Thunder Bay and Jacquie Grandmont suffered the hard-luck shootout setback for Dryden.

GAME 27--Midget A: Third place—James Bay 8 Schreiber 1—James Bay will have something to celebrate as they'll return home with the third place trophy from the Queens Showcase following a convincing win over Schreiber in the midget A bronze medal contest.

They would use seven different goal scorers as a well-balanced Ice Cats attack proved to be too much for the North Shore.

Jessika Carroll tallied twice in the triumph while Ciji Fortier, Tanya Morin, Melanie Collin, Jessica Dubord, Melodie Pominville and Kelsey Boivon supplied singles. Jessica Audet recorded the win in net.

Chloe Hewson had the lone goal for Schreiber.

GAME 28--Midget A: Final—OPG Queens 5 WSC Queens 0— The Ontario Power Generation midget A Queens capped off a perfect weekend capturing the crown as they proved to be too much for the Winning Streak Charters bantam AA side, who will have to settle for silver, in the title game.

Jessica Minoletti notched the lone marker in the opening period and was credited with the eventual championship-winning goal.

The OPG Queens opened up a four-goal lead after 30 minutes of play thanks to tallies from Cassy Curtis, Emily Armstrong and Minoletti's second of the day.

Karly Vis would round out the scoring in the final frame to seal the victory.

The win marked the second consecutive tournament title for the OPG Queens as they also brought home the title from Ice Breaker Cup in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. in November.

GAME 29--Midget AA: Third place—Eastman Selects 3 Winnipeg Ice 2— An all-Manitoba bronze medal game in the midget AA division went the way of the Eastman Selects who earned bragging rights in the narrow victory over their rivals from Winnipeg.

Celine Caron's goal with 4:45 remaining was the difference maker in this one.

Kylee Schettler pocketed the other two Eastman markers in the triumph.

Scoring for the Ice were Alexee Klassen and Eastyn Yuen.

GAME 30--Midget AA: Final—Sportop Queens 2 Shattuck-St. Mary's 1— An Azia Vass goal with 8:19 remaining was the difference as Thunder Bay edged Shattuck-St. Mary's to capture the midget AA championship.

Following a scoreless opening period Kaley Tienhaara put the Queens on the board 10:16 into the middle frame.

The Sabres' Brooke Boquist would pull her side level with just 19 seconds remaining in that second stanza.

Megan Leikkari would shut the door the rest of the way in the Thunder Bay net backstopping the Queens to the title.

GAME 31--WWHL: Minnesota 5 Manitoba 1—The Whitecaps finished off the two-game sweep of the Maple Leafs.

Allie Thunstrom registered three tallies while solo markers went to Sammy Nixon and Amanda Trunzo.

Thunder Bay native Natalie Vibert had the lone goal for Manitoba in the loss.

GAME 32--Bantam A: Final—Triad Queens 2 Hearst 1— Emily Varrin's goal with just 2:56 remaining gave Thunder Bay the bantam A title as they edged Hearst in the final game of the Showcase.

Neither team could get on the board in the opening stanza, but Andrianne Isabelle gave the Ice Cats the lead after two periods with an early goal in the session.

Thunder Bay would tie the contest 4:02 into the third as Madeline Browczuk connected on an assist to Hannah Armstrong.

That would set the stage for Varrin to bury the game-winner in the late going as the peewee Queens captured the title making it a gold-medal sweep for the Queens in the Showcase.
