Trio of Queens’ clubs remain in contention at provincials

TORONTO – As round robin play at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships in Toronto came to a close Saturday afternoon the Thunder Bay Queens still have three teams alive in the quest for crowns.

The Sportop midget AA Queens will take on the Oakville Hornets at 8:45 p.m. in quarter-final action while the Triad Contracting peewees will meet the North Simcoe Capitals at 7 p.m. in another quarter-final match-up.

Meanwhile the Norcan Tours and Travel midget A Queens have a qualification game against the Etobicoke Dolphins as they look to advance to the quarter-finals.

The following is a rundown on each of the Queens final round robin contests:

Triad Queens 3 North Simcoe Capitals 1 – Down 1-0 with less than three minutes to play the peewee Queens rallied with three unanswered goals to pull out a come from behind triumph over the Capitals to win their division and advance to the quarter-finals at the provincials.

Molly Kunnas tied the contest for Thunder Bay with 2:54 to play while Lucy Newman notched the game-winner just 17 seconds later.

Kunnas then iced it in the final minute to secure the triumph.

Josee Robinson picked up the win in net.

They will now meet the same North Simcoe side in quarter-final play at 7 p.m. at the Buckingham Arena complex in Toronto.

Guelph Jr. Gryphons 2 FCG Queens 0 – The season for the bantam AA Queens came to an end Saturday as they dropped their final round robin contest as they were blanked by Guelph.

Thunder Bay finished up with a 0-2-1 record in three games in the bantam AA division, which featured 24 teams taking part.
 
Bantam A: Mississauga Chiefs 1 Manshield Construction Queens 0 – The bantam A Queens season came to a close following a hard-fought 1-0 setback to Mississauga.

Samantha Stubbs suffered the setback in net for Thunder Bay as they finished up the provincials with a 1-2 overall record.

Midget A: vs. Oakville Hornets 2 Norcan Queens 1 – Oakville scored with 8:25 remaining to pull out the win over the Queens in midget A action.

Whitney Scott and Sarah Doyle combined to set-up Kaarina Kotanen to put Thunder Bay up one after a period.

The Hornets picked up the equalizer with just 22 seconds to go in the middle session and then won it in the third.

Bailey Chenier suffered the loss in net for the Queens

Despite the setback the club finished second in their division with a 2-1 record and move on to play the qualification game vs. Etobicoke.

The winner of that match-up with advance to a quarter-final contest vs. the Walkerton Capitals at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
