Sportop Queens win in 4th OT to advance to OWHA semifinals

TORONTO – Bronwyn Bolduc’s goal with 6:49 remaining in the fourth overtime lifted the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens past the Oakville Hornets 2-1 Saturday in quarter-final action at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships in Toronto.

Carly White staked Oakville to the early lead as she notched the lone tally of the opening period.

Thunder Bay would force extra time as Emily Oleksuk notched the equalizer midway through the third period.

Bolduc would then end it in the fourth OT as she buried the game-winner finishing off a feed from Karli Nummikoski to give the Queens the win.

Jayde Turcotte kicked out 31 or 32 shots she faced to register the victory for her side, who fired 42 attempts on the Hornets’ net.

Thunder Bay will now meet the Stoney Creek Sabres in semifinal play Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

It will be a battle of the Wolves in the other semifinal as Sudbury meets Whitby, also at 9:30 a.m.

The two winners will then compete for the provincial crown while the losers square off for the bronze with both contests slated for 2 p.m.
