Sportop Queens to play for bronze at provincials

TORONTO – An Emily Calligan goal with 1:20 remaining in the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Stoney Creek Sabres edged the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens 2-1 Sunday morning in semifinal action at Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships in Toronto.

Stoney Creek grabbed a 1-0 lead after one period of play on a Rachel Marmen tally.

Calligan then extended the Sabres cushion in the late going of the middle stanza before Taylor Basaraba got the Queens on the board with 29 seconds left in the period.

Samantha Isbell and Azia Vas had assists on the Thunder Bay goal.

They could not get an equalizer before time ran out to send the Sabres to the final where they’ll meet the Sudbury Lady Wolves for the provincial championship.

The Queens were outshot 17-15 in the contest with Jayde Turcotte suffering the defeat.

Thunder Bay will now meet the Whitby Wolves in the OWHA bronze medal game at 2 p.m. at Buckingham Arena in Toronto.
