Midget A Queens advance to CAN/AM final

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. – The Thunder Bay midget A Queens have advanced to the championship game of the Rainy River Community College CAN/AM Invitational in International Falls, Minn.

Thunder Bay earned their berth in the title game at 3:45 p.m. Sunday after defeating the Northern Michigan Wildcats 1-0 in their second game of the eight-team event Saturday.

Despite dominating the shots on goal department, the game was scoreless through two periods with Thunder Bay firing 24 on the Wildcats net while allowing just six against in the opening couple stanzas.

In the final frame however the constant Queens’ pressure persevered as Mikayla Sparks scored the only goal of the game 5:40 into the third.

Amanda Pages and Jacqueline Desimone picked up assists on the play.

Cameron Ivall in turn stopped all eight shots she faced to register the shutout for Thunder Bay, who put 38 pucks on the Northern Michigan netminder Addie Gustafson.

The Queens opened up with a 5-1 triumph over the Confederation College Thunderhawks Friday led by three-point performances by Madeline Browczuk and Kristin Martin.

The club will meet the Thunderhawks once again in the final after Con College rebounded from the game 1 defeat to upend both the host Rainy River C.C. side and the Lakehead Thunderwolves to advance to the title match-up.
