Sportop Queens drop opener in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Man. – The Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens fell behind early and could not recover dropping a 5-2 decision Friday to the St. Mary’s Academy Flames Prep team in the opener of a three-game exhibition series in Winnipeg.

After St. Mary’s struck three times in the opening period to get the early jump on the Queens, Thunder Bay battled back in the second to pull within one.

Teresa Rogalinksi notched the first marker 66 seconds into the middle stanza as she finished off the work of Paige Sullivan and Sarah Dodic.

Samantha Isbell then made it 3-2 with an unassisted effort just over seven minutes later.

The Flames would add one late in the second and one more in the third to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal favoured St. Mary’s 37-22 with Bailey Chenier suffering the setback in net.

The Queens return to game action Saturday vs. the Central Plains Capitals of Portage la Prairie Saturday morning in Winnipeg before rounding out the weekend with another match-up vs. the Flames Sunday at 11:45 a.m.
