Sportop Queens fall 5-3 in Winnipeg finale

WINNIPEG, Man. – The Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens wrapped up a three-game exhibition series in Winnipeg Sunday with a 5-3 loss to a strong St. Mary’s Academy Flames Prep team.

After St. Mary’s opened the scoring 13:15 into the first period, Thunder Bay drew level with 20 seconds remaining in the frame as Stefanie Hayward notched an unassisted goal.

The Flames struck three times in a two-minute span to take the lead for good before Avery Baker connected for the Queens midway through the stanza on an assists by Teresa Rogalinski.

The home side added another late in the period to go back up by three before Laura Deschamps rounded out the scoring for the visitors in the third after finishing off a feed from Paige Sullivan at 4:02.

Shots on goal favoured the Flames 38-28 with Bailey Chenier suffering the setback for Thunder Bay as St. Mary’s improved to 17-1-1-2 in their past 21 games.

The next out of town event for the Sportop midget AA Queens will be to compete in the Shaftesbury Titans Prep Winter Classic Jan. 16-18, 2015 back in Winnipeg.
