Bantam AA Queens crowned St. Luke’s Icebreaker Invitational champs

DULUTH, Minn. – The Thunder Bay RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens got two goals and an assist from Brooke Herman while Josée Robinson turned aside all 13 shots she faced to defeat the Stillwater Ponies 4-0 Sunday in the championship game of the St. Luke’s Icebreaker Invitational tournament  in Duluth.

Thunder Bay went a perfect 4-0 en route to the title allowing only two goals against in the process while posting three shutouts.

In the final vs. Stillwater, Herman notched the eventual game-winner with 1:50 remaining in the opening period as she finished off the work of Allyson Lesperance and Jessie Scott.

After a scoreless middle stanza, Herman added her second of the afternoon early in the final frame to add to the Queens’ lead.

Vanessa Nicholl added some insurance for Thunder Bay later in the third while Ellen Svane iced it with the final tally of the contest.

Nicholl. Lesperance and Dayna Doucet also earned assists in the victory.

The Queens outshot the Ponies 28-13 overall in the contest.

Their next out of town action will be the CAN/AM Challenge Cup Feb. 13-15 in Madison, Wis.

Meanwhile the Tim Hortons peewee Queens wrapped up play in Duluth as well with a 3-0 triumph over the White Bear Lake Bears to finish the tourney with a 1-2-1 record.

Kendra Fortin scored the only goal Thunder Bay would need in this one with five minutes remaining in the first.

Gaby Andreacchi added another for the Queens before the period was complete.

Olivia Nicholl then added some insurance in the middle stanza to round out the scoring.

Nicholl, Fortin, Grace Grosjean and Alexis Paddington added assists in the triumph.

Lindsay Humeniuk made 14 saves to record the shutout for her team.

Over in Winnipeg, the Sportop midget AA Queens, despite outshooting their opponents 26-13, dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the Peace Country Storm of Alberta in their last game at the Shaftesbury Prep Winter Classic in Winnipeg.

Paige Sullivan scored the lone Thunder Bay goal with assists going to Samantha Isbell and Sarah Dodic.

Fayth Chambers suffered the setback in net.
