Silver and pair of fourth place finishes for Queens in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – It was a tough day for the Thunder Bay Queens on the final day of the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Madison, Wis., as all three competing sides lost their respective medal round contests.

The RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens fell 3-0 to a strong St. Louis Lady Blues side in the championship game in that division while both the midget A Queens and Tim Hortons peewees dropped narrow one-goal decisions in bronze medal play.

A power play goal with one second remaining lifted the Colorado Selects to a 2-1 triumph over the midget A’s with the peewees falling 3-2 to the Brighton KV Ravens in their third place match-up.

For the bantam AA’s, St. Louis scored in the first minute of the contest and added two more in the second to finish unbeaten in five outings.

The Blues outshot Thunder Bay 37-12 in the match-up with Josée Robinson turning in a solid 34-save performance despite the loss.

Meanwhile the midget A side fell in dramatic fashion with Colorado potting the winner with an extra skater just as regulation time expired.

The Selects opened the scoring 20 seconds into the game only to see Montana Russo tie it for Thunder Bay at 8:56 of the first with assists going to Mary Flaherty and Mikayla Sparks.

It stayed that way until the very end when Colorado won it late with an unassisted power play marker from Natalie Maus.

The Queens outshot the Selects 40-17, but could only solve Hanna Markel in the Colorado net once with Taylor Gombola making 16 saves for Thunder Bay.

As for the peewee Queens, they battled back from a two-goal deficit, but in the end were edged by Brighton in their third place contest.

Down 2-0 in the second period, Alexis Paddington fed Gaby Andreacchi to pull the Queens to within one entering the third.

One minute into that final frame they notched the equalizer off the stick of Grace Grosjean on a play assisted by Kayla Stein.

Brighton then scored the game-winner with five and a half minutes to go in regulation.

Camryn Williams made 22 saves in net for the Queens in the setback.

In other action, the Sportop midget AA squad completed a two-game road sweep of the Dryden Eagles at Eagle Lake Arena winning 2-1 Saturday and 6-1 Sunday.
