Midget A Queens crowned champs in Hayward

HAYWARD, Wis. – Whitney Scott scored twice and helped set-up the game-winner as the Thunder Bay midget A Queens defeated the Minnesota Rush 3-1 in the championship game Sunday at the Fire on Ice under-19 tournament in Hayward, Wis.

Scott opened the scoring for Thunder Bay with the lone tally of the first period with assists going to Allison Pages and Alyssa Cicigoi.

After a scoreless middle session, Minnesota tied it at 4:07 into the third.

The Queens came right back and notched the eventual difference maker 49 seconds later as Scott and Danielle Saunders combined to feed Jordyn Paris for the go ahead goal.

A minute and a half later a Pages pass allowed Scott to cap off the victory with an insurance marker at 6:18 to round out the scoring.

Taylor Gombola made 17 saves to pick up the win for her side that fired 29 shots on the Rush net.

Thunder Bay advanced to the final following a 2-0 triumph over the Pembina Valley Hawks of Manitoba in semifinal play Sunday morning.

Paris had the game-winner in that one as well for the Queens with Pages picking up a helper.

Mary Flaherty added the other marker in the win with an assist going to Delaney McLeod.

Cameron Ivall stopped all 12 shots she faced to register the shutout.

In round robin play, Thunder Bay went 1-0-1 skating to a 1-1 draw vs. the East Metro Devils of Minneapolis before bouncing the host Hayward side 6-2.

Against East Metro, Pages scored on the power play with Ivall making 17 saves to help them earn a point.

McLeod tallied twice in the decision over Hayward while Paris, Zoe Hynnes, Amanda Pages and Mikayla Sparks supplied singles.

Gombola was the winning goaltender in that one in a contest that saw Thunder Bay hold the edge in shots by a 28-13 count.
