Queens prep for OWHA provincials

THUNDER BAY – Four of the five teams that comprise the Thunder Bay Queens rep program will be off to Toronto this weekend to compete in the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships.

Both the Sportop midget AA and the midget A Queens along with their RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA and Manshield Construction bantam A counterparts will take to the ice at various venues across the Greater Toronto Area to vie for provincial crowns.

The Sportop midget AA’s begin play Thursday evening as they take on the Etobicoke Dolphins at 9:15 p.m.

Two more tilts are on the slate Friday, starting with a 1:30 p.m. encounter vs. the Guelph Jr. Gryphons, which will be followed with 9:15 p.m. match-up against the Saugeen-Maitland Lightning.

A total of 24 teams will take part in the midget AA division with the winner advancing to represent Ontario at the 2015 Esso Cup Canadian National Female Midget Championship, April 19-25 in Red Deer, Alta.

Game action for the midget A Queens will commence Friday at 1:30 p.m. against the Timmins Falcons.

Thunder Bay will then tangle with the Brantford Ice Cats later in the day at 9:30 p.m.

They will then wrap-up round robin play vs. the Scarborough Sharks Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

Two dozen teams are also in the midget A group.

As for the 20 squads that make-up the bantam AA division, they too start play Friday with the Queens opening up against the Peterborough Ice Kats at 1:30 p.m.

Next up features an 8 p.m. face-off vs. the Clarington Flames at 8 p.m. in game two of the day for the club.

Providing the opposition in their third contest will be the North Halton Twisters, who they’ll meet Saturday at noon.

A 10:45 a.m. start Friday against the Owen Sound Ice Hawks will mark the first game for the bantam A Queens at the provincials.

They will then meet the Scarborough Sharks at 6:30 p.m. to conclude Day 1 competition.

Rounding out their schedule in the 24-team bantam A division will be a date with the London Devilettes Saturday at 8:15 a.m.

Qualification and quarter-final games in each group will go Saturday evening while semifinal and championship contests are slated for Sunday.

The Tim Hortons peewee Queens will not be competing at the provincials as their season has concluded.
