Mixed results for Queens at OWHA provincials

TORONTO – It was a day of mixed results for the Thunder Bay Queens at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships taking place in Toronto.

The midget A Queens are off to a perfect 2-0 after their first two round robin contests while the Sportop midget AA side went 0-2-1.

As for the Manshield Construction bantam A squad, they have started 1-1 and the RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA side have gone 0-2 after a pair of hard-fought one-goal setbacks.

The midget A’s are spotless starting 2-0 with a pair of shutouts as they blanked the Timmins Falcons 2-0 and followed that up with a 1-0 decision over the Brantford Ice Cats.

Against Timmins, Madeline Browczuk had the game-winner 2:46 into the contest while Whitney Scott added some insurance five minutes later.

Danielle Sanders, Allison Pages and Jordyn Paris picked up assists on the tallies.

Cameron Ivall posted the shutout.

In the game vs. Brantford, Jacqueline Desimone had the lone marker in that one scoring with 2:32 to go in the second with Sanders adding the lone helper.

Taylor Gombola picked up the shutout in the decision over the Ice Cats.

They meet the Scarborough Sharks at 10:45 a.m. Saturday with a berth in the playoff into the playoff round on the line should they come away with a win.

The news wasn’t as fortunate for the Sportop midget AA’s.

The rallied late to salvage a 1-1 draw with the Etobicoke Dolphins in their opener thanks to a Danielle Veneruzzo power play marker with 1:13 remaining in regulation.

Stefanie Hayward and Avery Baker picked up assists on the equalizer.

Bailey Chenier was in net helping her side pick up a point.

Game 2 saw Thunder Bay fall 1-0 to the Guelph Jr. Gryphons with Jordyn Cousins notching the lone tally of the contest with 6:08 to go in the second period.

Fayth Chambers suffered the narrow loss in goal for the Queens.

They then saw their season come to a close Friday evening as they dropped another close game as they were edged 2-1 by the Saugeen-Maitland Lightning.

The bantam AA squad started off with a tough 2-1 defeat to the Peterborough Ice Kats.

After a scoreless first, Peterborough opened the scoring with 4:17 left in the middle stanza.

Thunder Bay countered with the tying goal with 9.1 seconds left in the frame as Brooke Herman finished off the work of Brenna Bohonos and Vanessa Nicholl.

The Ice Kats then went back in front for good early in the third and held on from there despite the Queens pressing hard for the equalizer.

Josée Robinson suffered the loss between the pipes.

The Clarington Flames then handed the Queens another defeat as they won 2-0, which included an empty netter late.

Robinson was in net once again.

As the for Manshield Construction bantam A’s they started with a 3-1 setback vs. the Owen Sound Ice Hawks before rallying and pulling out a 2-1 triumph vs. Scarborough.

The bantam AA’s wrap-up play Saturday at noon as they meet the North Halton Twisters while the bantam A’s take on London Devilettes at 8:15 a.m.
