Queens edged late in Stoney Creek quarter-final

STONEY CREEK, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens run at the 11th annual Stoney Creek Sabres Showcase came to an end Sunday as they were edged 3-2 late by the Brantford Ice Cats in a hard-fought quarter-final contest.

Brantford battled back from a 2-0 first period deficit to score the game-winner with just four seconds remaining in regulation.

The Queens got on the board four minutes into the contest as Emilie Varrin finished off the work Danielle Veneruzzo and Briana Prete.

Kaylee Grosjean then extended the lead at 8:22 with assists going to Varrin and Sarah Dodic.

The Ice Cats countered that with two of their own in the middle stanza to knot the affair at 2-2 heading into the final session.

Then with overtime looming, Brantford won it in the waning moments on Lauren Martin’s late game-winner that eluded Queens’ netminder Bailey Chenier.

Thunder Bay finished the 64-team tourney with a 3-1-1 record in five outings.

The Sportop midget AA Queens next out of town event will be the first round of the Two Nations Prep Series, which goes Oct. 23-25 in Detroit, Mich.
