Queens start 1-0-1 in Stoney Creek

STONEY CREEK, Ont. – The RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens are unbeaten after two games in opening day action at the Stoney Creek Sabres AA Showcase tournament in southern Ontario.

Thunder Bay opened up by battling back to tie the Philadelphia Little Flyers 2-2 before going on to defeat Honeybaked of Michigan 3-1 in their second game Friday.

In their opener Thunder Bay outshot Philadelphia 25-13 in the contest, but needed a third period rally to earn a point.

Down 2-0 in the latter stages of the third period, the Queens got on the board with 5:38 left as Mackenzie Lehto finished off the work of Rachel Chambers and Brynne Lambert.

Continuing to press the attack, Thunder Bay was rewarded with the equalizer with 78 seconds remaining as Lambert buried a feed from Carly Hennessey to earn the draw.

Josée Robinson was in net for the Queens in the tie.

Against Honeybaked, the two sides played a scoreless opening period before the U.S. side from suburban Detroit struck first with five and a half minutes to go in the middle session.

Thunder Bay countered that with a Brenna Nicol effort a couple shifts later with Hannah Leung earning an assist.

Meghan MacIssac would notch the eventual game-winner early in the third thanks to a pass from Nicol.

Molly Kunnas then added some insurance midway through the third to round out the scoring.

Paige Wilson went the distance in net for the Queens in earning the victory.

Round robin play for the club concludes Saturday at 9:25 a.m. when they face-off against the Kingston Ice Wolves.

Further match-ups in Stoney Creek will then be based on the results of their first three outings.

A total of 24 teams from across Ontario and the U.S. are taking part in the bantam AA division in the three-day tournament.
