Bantam AA Queens win bronze at Icebreaker Invitational in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. – The Thunder Bay RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens have returned home from the St. Luke's Icebreaker Invitational tournament in Duluth, Minn., over the weekend after winning the bronze medal.

They defeated the Brainerd Warriors 5-1 in the third place game Sunday after dropping a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Edina Green in semifinal action earlier in the day.

In the match-up with Brainerd Cassandra Carangi had a hat trick, including the game-winner, for Thunder Bay.

Brenna Nicol and Hana Whalen notched the other efforts for the Queens while Brynne Lambert, Kailey Swerhun, and Jocelyn Wojciechowski dished out two assists apiece.

Paige Wilson was the winning goaltender in the bronze medal contest

The tightly-played semifinal affair with Edina went right down to the wire as the club from suburban Minneapolis scored the deciding goal with just 42 seconds left in regulation.

Thunder Bay’s lone tally came in the first period off the stick of Mackenzie Lehto.

Josée Robinson faced 17 shots in defeat for the Queens.

The peewee Queens were also in Duluth and they finished with a 1-3 record, including a 6-2 setback vs. the Elk River Elks in the consolation final.

They defeated the host Icebreakers 7-0 Sunday to advance to that contest.

The bantam AA’s head back out of town Feb. 5-7 for the Prelude to the Playoffs tourney in Eden Prairie, Minn.

Meanwhile over in Winnipeg, the Sportop midget AA side wrapped up play at the Futures Winter Classic Sunday with a narrow 1-0 setback against the Westman Wildcats from Manitoba.

The Selects notched the game’s lone tally on an early first period power play marker.

Aden Johnson suffered the setback in goal for the Queens.

The midget AA’s next out of town action has them traveling to Rockville, Maryland Feb. 13-15 to compete in the JWHL Challenge Cup.
