Queens conclude play at Duluth Icebreakers tourney

DULUTH, Minn. – The Thunder Bay bantam AA and peewee Queens wrapped up play Sunday at the St. Luke’s Icebreakers Invitational tournament in Duluth, Minn., Sunday with a loss and a win.

The bantams finished with a 3-0 setback vs. the Chicago Young Americans in the bronze medal game of the AA division to finish fourth out of 12 teams.

Peewee play saw the Queens finish on a positive note as they defeated the host Duluth Icebreakers 4-1.

The bantams started strong in Duluth with a 6-0 shutout of the Grand Rapids – Greenway Lightning Friday.

Kailey Swerhun and Alexis Paddington put Thunder Bay up 2-0 in the first three minutes of the game.

They then got second period markers from Sarah Grieve and Olivia Nicholl.

Swerhun and Paddington scored again in the third to round out the win.

Brenna Nicol dished out three assists while Camryn Williams posted the shutout.

In their second game they skated to a hard-fought 3-2 win over Rochester, Minn.

After a scoreless first, Swerhun finished off a pair of crisp passes from Nicholl and Grieve to put the club in front.

Rochester would strike twice on the power play to tie it, but Nicholl notched the game-winner with 17 seconds remaining with assists going to Brenna Nicol and Paddington.

Lindsay Humeniuk earned the win in goal, which included a couple of big saves against Rochester.

Advancing to the Gold Division semifinal, Thunder Bay fell 4-1 Saturday to a powerful Edina Green side.

Paddington had a shorthanded marker to put the Queens on the board early in the first, but Edina scored twice late on the power play to go in front for good.

Humeniuk suffered the defeat in net.

Taking on Duluth Sunday, the peewees got a pair of goals and an assist from Kaiya Kamande to help them to victory.

Amber Yesno-Linklater and Jenna Jackson also scored for the Queens while Reese Keating picked up the win in goal.

Earlier action saw the peewees fall 3-0 to both the Minnetonka Skippers and Woodbury Predators and 4-3 vs. Coon Rapids – Champlin Park in their first three contests.
