Sportop Midget AA Queens fall in semifinals in Maryland; Bantam AA's take 2 of 3 in Duluth

ROCKVILLE, Md. – The Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens dropped a 3-1 decision to Detroit Belle Tire Monday in semifinal action at the 10th annual JWHL Challenge Cup in the suburban Washington, D.C., community of Rockville, Maryland.

After a scoreless first frame, Thunder Bay opened the scoring six and a half minutes into the middle stanza on an Amanda Pages marker that was assisted by Karadyn Kiviaho.

However Detroit tied it 20 seconds later then got the game-winner with 4:38 left in the session.

Belle Tire added one more in the third to secure the victory.

Josée Robinson turned in a solid performance in goal for the Queens facing 33 shots in the setback.

Meanwhile the bantam AA Queens have returned home from a three-game set in Duluth, Minn., over the weekend with a pair of victories to their credit.

In their opener Saturday against the Proctor-Hermantown Mirage the bantam AA’s fell 5-2.

Olivia Nicholl and Sarah Grieve supplied the club’s tallies in the loss with Lindsay Humeniuk allowing four against in defeat with the fifth goal being scored into an empty net in the late going.

Sunday morning the Queens met the Mirage once again where they rebounded with a 4-2 triumph.

Kailey Swerhun staked Thunder Bay to the lead in the first period while Alexis Paddington scored on the power play and Grieve at even strength in the second to put the squad up by two.

After Proctor-Hermantown pulled to within one midway through the third, Nicholl iced it with as empty netter.  

Camryn Williams locked down the victory despite being outshot by the Mirage 25-19.

In the finale of the road trip Sunday they took on the Grand Rapids-Greenway Lightning and skated to a 4-2 victory.

Brenna Nicol tipped home a shot from Julia Buchan to put the Queens up in the first with Paddington adding another marker late in the first, via the power play.   

Nicol added her second on the PP to put the team up three going into the intermission.   

The Lightning stormed back with two goals in the third to make it close, Buchan and Kendra Fortin caught Grand Rapids-Greenway on a line change with Fortin finishing the two-on-one to put away the game late in the contest.  

Humeniuk and Williams split duties between the pipes in the win.
