Bantam A & peewee Queens wrap-up Day 1 play in Norwest Stars tourney

THUNDER BAY – Both the Thunder Bay Tim Hortons bantam A and the peewee Queens took to the ice twice Friday in the Norwest Stars tournament Friday and picked up one victory as they compete in the boys peewee AA division.

The bantam A’s began with a 3-2 triumph over the Nipigon Elks before falling 2-0 to the Elks 82’s while the peewees fell 3-1 to the Fort Frances Canadians and 5-2 to the host Norwest Stars.

In the victory over Nipigon, Grace Grosjean put the Queens in front as she buried a loose puck on a shot off the crossbar by Grace Cahill.

After Nipigon tied it, both clubs would connect in the middle session, including Mackenzie Cambly's great effort to circle the net to get a shot and then hammer home her own rebound.

Grosjean then supplied the game-winner early in the third as she split the defence and went high glove side with the difference maker.

Marissa Brosseau picked up the win in net for Thunder Bay.

In the match-up with the Elks, the 82’s scored once shorthanded and another on a power play in the opening period for the only two tallies of the contest.

Brosseau kept her side in it and turned in a solid performance despite the setback.

As for the peewees, they took a 1-0 lead on Fort Frances after the opening session thanks to Kali Grootenboer, who finished off a Paige Broughton feed.

The Canadians came back however notching a pair of markers less than a minute apart in the latter stages of the second and one more in the third to complete the comeback.

Mykaila George was in net for the Queens.

The peewees then concluded the day vs. Norwest and trailed throughout despite a third period rally that saw them get goals from Taylor Berenz at even strength and Jenna Jackson on the power play while keeping the Stars off the scoresheet.

Alessia Ricciardi and Reese Coffey picked up assists along the way.

Reese Keating started for the Queens while George finished up in relief.

Saturday has peewees meeting the Westfort Maroons at 8 a.m. and the bantams meeting the K.C. Sabres at 12:30 p.m. to wrap-up round robin play.
