Shattuck-St. Mary’s too much for Queens in World Sports School Challenge opener

WINNIPEG, Man. – A strong Shattuck-St. Mary’s Sabres under-19 Prep side skated to a 5-1 victory over the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens Thursday in opening day action at the World Sports School Challenge in Winnipeg, Man.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s, the top ranked U-19 team in the U.S., got a goal and three assists from Maureen Murphy to lead them to the win.

The Sabres led 2-0 after one period of the play, and then picked up one shorthanded and another on the power play in the middle stanza to go up by four.

Lucy Newman registered the lone Thunder Bay tally in the final moments of the second as she finished off the work of teammates Tia Lampo and Molly Kunnas at 19:50 of the frame.

Maddie Mills notched her second power play marker of the afternoon in the third to round out the scoring for Shattuck.

The Queens were outshot 53-13 in the contest with Thunder Bay netminder Josée Robinson earning player of the game laurels for her side with an impressive 48-save performance in defeat.

Murphy picked up the game star honours for the Sabres.

The midget AA Queens return to the ice twice Friday beginning with a 9:30 a.m. contest vs. the host St. Mary’s Academy Flames of Winnipeg before wrapping up the day against the Notre Dame Hounds from Saskatchewan at 8:15 p.m.
