Midget A Queens capture bronze medal match at OWHA provincials

TORONTO, Ont. – The Thunder Bay Topper’s Pizza midget A Queens are returning home from the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships in Toronto with a bronze medal after defeating the Stoney Creek Sabres 2-1 in overtime in the third place game Sunday.

Caitlin Olinski supplied the game-winner in extra time for Thunder Bay to give them the bronze.

Jocelyn Wojciechowksi notched the Queens’ marker in regulation.

In semifinal play, Thunder Bay dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to the London Devilettes earlier in the day.

London opened the scoring in that contest midway through the first before Mackenzie Lehto responded for the Queens with 43 seconds left in the stanza. Earning assists on the play were Brooke Herman and Brenna Veneruz.

The Devilettes then added power play goals in the second and third to go up by two before Cassandra Carangi got one back late while up a skater in the late going to round out the scoring. Brynne Lambert and Madisonlee Fullum helped set-up that tally.

Anjelina Badanai and Cameron Ivall both saw action in both games for Thunder Bay on the day.

A total of 24 midget A clubs competed in that group with the Queens wrapping up their 2016-17 season with the bronze medal finish.
