Sportop Queens 4-0 so far at CCCCC

THUNDER BAY, ON – The Sportop Midget AA Queens opened up the Confederation College Caribou Coach Classic Tournament Friday afternoon by taking on the host Confederation College Thunderhawks. The Queens would get on the board in the first 90 seconds on a goal by Molly Kunnas. Brynne Lambert extended the Queens lead before Kunnas would pot her second of the period giving the Sportop Queens a 3-0 lead after the first. In the second period, Kaylee Grosjean and Mackenzie Lehto would score just over a minute apart to give the Queens a commanding 5-0 lead. Goalie Makenna Burke would shut the door the whole game earning the shutout.

In their evening game, the Winnipeg North Stars got a jump on Thunder Bay with a late first period goal but the Queens quickly got it back as Jamie Ricklefs would tie the game just over a minute later. The Queens dominated the shot count, in total putting 47 pucks on net compared to 17 the other way. Despite this, the score remained 1-1 through two periods. Finally, half way through the third period Grosjean would break the tie and in the final minutes Brenna Nicol notched the insurance marker to give the Queens a 3-1 victory.

Saturday at noon, their 2-0 record would be put to the test against the Polar Ice. It was a seesaw battle of sorts with the Queens opening the scoring on a goal at the hands of Victoria Darosa. The Polar Ice though would tie it up midway through the second. Thunder Bay would regain the lead on a goal by Kunnas just moments later. The Ice would again tie it at two aside late in the third but again, Kunnas would respond shortly after with the go ahead goal. Burke would manage to hold the 1-goal lead as the Sportop Queens hung onto the 3-2 win, going 3-0 through the round robin.

Their undefeated streak would pit them in a favourable matchup against Sault College in Quarter-Final action. Thunder Bay marched to an 8-0 win in a total team effort with 7 different players scoring and even goaltender Aden Johnson getting an assist as well as the shutout. With this win, the Queens are placed in the semi-finals Sunday morning against the Winnipeg North Stars. A win would put them into the Championship game at noon.
