Sportop Queens Capture Caribou Coach Crown

THUNDER BAY, ON - The Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens went a perfect 6-0 this weekend to capture the championship crown at the Confederation College Caribou Coach Classic. Beginning on Friday with a 5-0 win over host Confederation College Thunderhawks and a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg North Stars, the Queens would later eke by the Polar Ice on Saturday with a 3-2 victory to guarantee their playoff spot.

Back-to-back shutouts in the Quarter-Finals (8-0 over Sault College by goaltender Aden Johnson) and the Semi-Finals (5-0 over Winnipeg by netminder Makenna Burke) put them in the gold medal game, and a re-match, with Polar Ice Sunday afternoon.

In the first period of the championship game, the Polar Ice drew an early powerplay threatening to take the lead but it was the Queens who’d get on the board first as Mackenzie Lehto forced a turnover at her own blue line and went in on a breakaway scoring glove side.  Thunder Bay would get on the board again with as Kaylee Grosjean followed up a rebound jamming the puck in.

The Sportop Queens would add to their lead scoring one more goal in each of the second and third periods, putting the final touches on a 4-0 win as Aden Johnson would get her second straight shutout, and the Queens third straight shutout, on a dominant run to the Caribou Coach Classic Championship outscoring their opponents 28 to 3.
