Silver and pair of fourth place finishes for Queens in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – It was a tough day for the Thunder Bay Queens on the final day of the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Madison, Wis., as all three competing sides lost their respective medal round contests.

The RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens fell 3-0 to a strong St. Louis Lady Blues side in the championship game in that division while both the midget A Queens and Tim Hortons peewees dropped narrow one-goal decisions in bronze medal play.

A power play goal with one second remaining lifted the Colorado Selects to a 2-1 triumph over the midget A’s with the peewees falling 3-2 to the Brighton KV Ravens in their third place match-up.

For the bantam AA’s, St. Louis scored in the first minute of the contest and added two more in the second to finish unbeaten in five outings.

The Blues outshot Thunder Bay 37-12 in the match-up with Josée Robinson turning in a solid 34-save performance despite the loss.

Meanwhile the midget A side fell in dramatic fashion with Colorado potting the winner with an extra skater just as regulation time expired.

The Selects opened the scoring 20 seconds into the game only to see Montana Russo tie it for Thunder Bay at 8:56 of the first with assists going to Mary Flaherty and Mikayla Sparks.

It stayed that way until the very end when Colorado won it late with an unassisted power play marker from Natalie Maus.

The Queens outshot the Selects 40-17, but could only solve Hanna Markel in the Colorado net once with Taylor Gombola making 16 saves for Thunder Bay.

As for the peewee Queens, they battled back from a two-goal deficit, but in the end were edged by Brighton in their third place contest.

Down 2-0 in the second period, Alexis Paddington fed Gaby Andreacchi to pull the Queens to within one entering the third.

One minute into that final frame they notched the equalizer off the stick of Grace Grosjean on a play assisted by Kayla Stein.

Brighton then scored the game-winner with five and a half minutes to go in regulation.

Camryn Williams made 22 saves in net for the Queens in the setback.

In other action, the Sportop midget AA squad completed a two-game road sweep of the Dryden Eagles at Eagle Lake Arena winning 2-1 Saturday and 6-1 Sunday.

Queens to play for medals in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – Each of the three Thunder Bay Queens teams competing at the fourth annual CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Madison, Wis., will play for a medal on Sunday.

The RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens while go in search of the gold as they take on the St. Louis Lady Blues at 10:15 a.m. in the title game.

Meanwhile the midget A side meet the Colorado Selects at 2:15 p.m. in the third place contest with the Tim Hortons peewees also skating in a bronze medal match-up as they square off against the Brighton KV Ravens at 9 a.m.

The bantam AA’s punched their ticket to the final after skating to a 1-1 tie with the Madison Capitols Saturday and topping the Chicago Fury 3-1 later in the day.

Down against Madison, Carly Hennesssey provided the equalizer for the Queens in the second period in the tightly-played game.

Josée Robinson stopped 14 of 15 in helping her squad pick up a point.

Taking on Chicago, Victoria Darosa got the Queens going by tallying twice in the first period.

Vanessa Nichol put Thunder Bay up by three in the second before the Fury added one later in the middle session.

Makenna Burke shut the door the rest of the way finishing with 23 saves in earning the triumph in net.

After starting with a pair of convincing wins Friday, the midget A Queens dropped a couple of hard-fought one-goal decisions Saturday.

They began with a 4-3 defeat vs. the Minnesota Revolution before being blanked 1-0 by the Chicago Fury in evening action.

In the contest against Minnesota, the Revolution took a 1-0 lead into the second period before Allison Pages tied it 6:21 into the second.

Minnesota added another seven minutes later to take the lead into the third.

The Revolution added another 38 seconds into the final frame before Thunder Bay answered back with goals courtesy of Montana Russo and Pages to tie it late.

Minnesota’s Morgan Helgeson added her second of the game with just over a minute to go however to pull out the victory.

The Queens held the edge in shots on goal 33-27 with Cameron Ivall suffering the loss.

Against Chicago, Emma Paravola notched the lone tally of the game eight seconds into the middle stanza as the Fury blanked Thunder Bay.

The Queens pumped 37 shots on Chicago netminder Emily Wissemas, but could not solve her.

Taylor Gombola faced 19 attempts in defeat for her side.

As for the Tim Hortons peewees, they too earned a chance to play for bronze after skating to a 3-3 draw with the St. Louis Lady Blues Saturday.

St. Louis took the lead early in that contest only to see Kayla Stein tie it before the first was completed.

After a scoreless second, the two teams traded a pair of markers each in the third to finish things off.

Alexi Paddington accounted for both Thunder Bay goals.

Lindsay Humeniuk was outstanding for the Queens in net finishing with 46 saves overall to secure her club’s berth in the bronze medal game.

Queens win 4 of 6 to open CAN/AM Cup in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – Opening day action for the Thunder Bay Queens was a respectable one at the fourth annual CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Madison, Wis., as the three competing clubs there won four of the six games they played.

The midget A Queens went 2-0 on day 1 posting wins over the Keweenaw Storm of Hancock, Mich., and the Highland Park Flames of Illinois.

They started off with a 6-2 victory against Keweenaw and followed that up with a 6-1 decision against Highland Park.

Meanwhile RBC Dominion Securities bantam A and Tim Hortons peewee sides both went 1-1 to begin the tourney.

Game 1 for the midget A’s vs. the Storm saw Whitney Scott pace the attack with a goal and two assists.

Supplying singles in the triumph were Jordyn Paris, Alyssa Cicigoi, Mikayla Sparks, Montana Russo and Kaarina Kotanen.

Thunder Bay outshot Kewweenaw 34-14 in the contest with Cameron Ivall picking up the win in net.

In the decision against the Flames, Sparks tallied twice and set-up another to lead the way offensively.

Allison Pages, Jacqueline Desimone, Madeline Browczuk and Delaney McLeod also scored in the win while Scott doled out a pair of assists.

Taylor Gombola earned the victory in goal for the Queens.

The midget A Queens return to the ice Saturday as they meet the Minnesota Revolution at 3:15 p.m. followed by a 10 p.m. encounter vs. the Chicago Fury.

As for the bantam AA Queens they began the CAN/AM Challenge Cup with a 4-0 shutout of the Eastman Selects of Manitoba riding a 16-save shutout by Josée Robinson before falling 4-1 against St. Louis Lady Blues later in the day.

Vanessa Nicholl opened the scoring for Thunder Bay with the eventual game-winner.

Allyson Lesperance added to the lead 4:31 into the middle session before getting insurance efforts courtesy of Carly Hennessey and Victoria Darosa in the third.

Dayna Doucet chipped in with a couple of helpers to aid the offensive cause for the Queens.

In the contest vs. St. Louis, the game was scoreless into the third period before the Blues struck four times in an 11-minute span to pull out the win helped by Skye Ziehwain’s two-goal performance.

Darosa had the lone Thunder Bay marker in the late going on an assist by Ellen Svane.

Shots on goal favoured St. Louis 25-21 with Makenna Burke suffering the setback in net.

The bantams also play twice Saturday as they take on the Madison Capitols in a 2:30 p.m. start before meeting the Chicago Fury at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile the Tim Hortons peewees started off by doubling up the Brighton KV Ravens 4-2 before being topped 8-1 by a strong Edina Hornets Green side.

Alexis Paddington scored twice for the Queens, including the game-winner, in the triumph over Brighton with Isabella Badanai and Grace Grosjean also finding the back of the net.

Hope Bobyck-Goheen dished out a pair of assists in the win.

Shots on goal were 22-16 with Thunder Bay having the edge in a contest that saw Lindsay Humeniuk earn the decision.

In the loss to Edina, Olivia Nicholl had the lone marker for the Queens in a game they were outshot 47-13.

Goaltender Camryn Williams made 39 stops in defeat.

The peewees wrap-up round-robin play Saturday at 1:30 p.m. vs. St. Louis.
