Bantam AA Queens miss semifinals in Eden Prairie by a goal

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – The Thunder Bay RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens fell just short of a semifinal berth at the Prelude to the Playoffs tournament in Eden Prairie, Minn., despite a pair of victories Saturday.

Thunder Bay began their day with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over the Osseo-Maple Grove Orioles and followed that up with a 3-1 decision vs. the North Wright County River Hawks.

Against the Orioles, Jocelyn Wojciechowski gave Thunder Bay the lead with an early first period marker that was assisted by Hana Whalen.

Osseo-Maple Grove tied it in the latter stages of the first and it stayed tied at 1-1 until deep into the third period.

It was there that the Quesns got the game-winner with 2:24 to go as Molly Kunnas supplied the difference maker on a feed from Lucy Newman.

Thunder Bay outshot their opponents 21-17 with Josée Robinson picking up the win in net.

In the match-up with North Wright County, the Queens knew they had to win by at least four to earn a spot in semifinal action Sunday.

After a scoreless opening frame, they got two goals from Brenna Nicol in the second to go up by a pair.

Kunnas added another in the third as they took a 3-0 lead late.

Needing that other marker to advance, they pulled starting goaltender Paige Wilson in favour of an extra attacker, but the River Hawks put one into the empty net in the final seconds to dash the club’s semifinal hopes.

Thunder Bay fired 32 shots on net in the win while Wilson saved all 11 attempts she had to face in victory.

Meanwhile the peewee Queens will play for fifth place at the Cabin Fever Classic in Maple Grove, Minn.

Saturday saw them drop a narrow 1-0 decision to the Alexandria Cardinals before rebounding in a big way to thump North Wright Country 7-0.

They’ll take on the Forest Lake Rangers in their final game Sunday, which goes at 1 p.m.
