Queens’ announce second half CCM performer award recipients

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Queens, in conjunction with CCM Hockey, announced Wednesday their second half performer awards for the 2015-16 season.

One player from each of the five Queens’ team was recognized for their contributions to their respective clubs as well as their on-ice success.

Similar honours were previously presented for the first half of the 2015-16 campaign.

The Thunder Bay Queens would like to extend their sincere appreciation to CCM Hockey for their continued support of the organization.

The following are the Queens' second half CCM Hockey performer awards, by team:

PEEWEE: Gabriella Andreacchi, Forward

1st Half recipient: Alexis Paddington, Forward

TIM HORTONS BANTAM A: Sibley Duckert, Forward

1st Half recipient: Taylor Armstrong, Forward

RBC DOMINION SECURITIES BANTAM AA: Paige Wilson, Goaltender

Queens’ season comes to a close

TORONTO – The Thunder Bay Queens season came to a close Saturday at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships in Toronto.

The Goldcorp midget A side finished up their 2015-16 campaign with a narrow 3-2 loss vs. the Markham-Stouffville Stars.

Jessie Page and Allyson Lesperance tallied for Thunder Bay in defeat while Cameron Ivall was in goal.

As for the RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens then began the day with a 3-0 victory over the Nepean Wildcats before dropping a narrow 1-0 decision to the Stoney Creek Sabres in a play-in game with a berth to the quarter-finals on the line.

In the win over Nepean, the contest was scoreless into the third before the Queens stuck three times in the third to secure the decision.

Mackenzie Lehto, Lucy Newman and Brynne Lambert notched the markers for Thunder Bay while Josée Robinson posted the shutout.

Against Stoney Creek, the Sabres scored the lone goal of the contest in the first and held on from there for the triumph.

Robinson suffered the setback in net for Thunder Bay.

Team tryouts for the 2016-17 season will commence May 7-8 for the midget AA and bantam AA teams and May 14-15 for the midget A and bantam A squads.

All ice sessions will be hold at Fort William First Nation Arena.

OWHA provincials Day 2 wrap

TORONTO – Each of the three Thunder Bay Queens clubs competing at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships in Toronto Friday skated away with mixed results.

The Sportop midget AA Queens began with a 1-1 draw with the St. Catharines Brock Jr. Badgers before being blanked 4-0 by the Toronto Aeros.

As the for Goldcorp midget A side they started with a 1-1 tie vs. the Toronto Leaside Wildcats, but were then shutout 3-0 by the Peterborough Ice Kats.

Meanwhile the RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens edged the Whitby Wolves 2-1 before being bounced 6-0 by the Burlington Barracudas.

In the midget AA contest against St. Catharines, Thunder Bay trailed 1-0 late into the match-up before Teresa Rogalinski notched the equalizer with 5:10 to go finishing off a feed from Karadyn Kiviaho.

Bailey Chenier was in goal for the Queens.

Taking on Toronto, the Aeros scored three times in the middle session and once more in the third to secure the victory.

Aden Johnson suffered the loss in net.

As for the midget A squad, Jessie Page notched the lone tally vs. Toronto Leaside with Cameron Ivall tending net in the draw.

Meanwhile the Peterborough game saw the Ice Kats tally twice in the second stanza before adding one into an empty late in the third to account for the scoring.

Suffering the defeat in net was Taylor Gombola.

In bantam AA play, Thunder Bay rode the strong goaltending of Josée Robinson to edge a strong Whitby side in their opener.

After a scoreless first, the Queens struck twice in the middle session on markers by Kailey Swerhun and the eventual game-winner courtesy of Molly Kunnas with 3:07 left in the period.

Whitby got one back midway through the third, but Robinson shut the door from there to secure the decision.

Taking on Burlington it was all Barracudas as they rolled to a convincing triumph to even the Queens record at 1-1.

Midget A action continues Saturday as the Markham-Stouffville Stars provide the opposition at 8 a.m.

As for the bantam AA they finish up with the Nepean Wildcats at noon on Saturday.
