Peewee Queens Take Bronze at Cupid Classic

BLOOMINGTON, MN — The GridLink Atom Queens would drop their final game of the tournament against Anoka/Rogers. Anoka scored the first three goals of the game to put it out of reach. Thunder Bay responded with a late goal by Brynn Hannula in the 3-1 loss. The GridLink Queens leave the Cupid Classic with a record of 2-2-1 in the 10U A division.

Meanwhile the Peewee Queens got put into the Championship bracket in the 12U A division. Thunder Bay would lose in the semi-finals to the 3rd ranked team in Minnesota, Eagan, by a score of 1-0. This relegated the Queens to the bronze medal game against 5th ranked team in the state, Owatonna, which yielded another 1-0 game but this time it was the Queens coming out on top with Akira Tatebe playing the role of hero scoring the only goal of the game, while Mia Attema stymied Owatonna shutting them out and earning the girls 3rd place.

Peewee, GridLink Atom Queens Teams Go 1-0-1 on Day 2

BLOOMINGTON, MN — Both the Peewee and Atom Queens teams would go undefeated on day two of the Cupid Classic Tournament in Bloomington both earning a win and a tie.

The Peewees opened up Saturday in the 12U A division against the St. Paul Capitals in a slow starting game in which a single goal was yielded to the Queens from Tehya St. Jean. In the second, both teams would seesaw goals as Paige Broughton’s 2-0 goal for the Queens would be met a marker from St. Paul and then Joanna Martinsen’s 3-1 goal to regain the 2-goal lead would be short-lived as the Capitals would get it back seconds later. With a one-goal lead going into the final frame, the Queens began to take over. Rhae Thomas started the rally early on to regain the 2-goal lead, Martinsen notched her second to extend the lead and Tehya bookended the scoresheet getting the first and last goals of the game, leading the Queens to a 6-2 Final. In their second matchup of the day, the Queens would fall behind early to Anoka/Rogers. Thunder Bay responded in the second with three answered goals of their own as Kaiya Kamande scored two goals in less than two minutes and then Ella Mannila would capitalize on a setup from Avery Olenik. The game looked to be heading toward the win column for the Queens when they got into penalty trouble. Anoka/Rogers would score two powerplay goals with 2:30 and 25 seconds left to tie the game.

Over in the 10U A division, the GridLink Atom Queens dominated the Minneapolis Storm 7-1 in their morning game. Mailyn Illson’s early score would be equaled by the Storm but it’d be all Queens from there on out. Elizabeth Gagnon, Kingston Golding and Mya Steele all got on the goal column while Makenzee Kostiuk scored a hattrick. In the afternoon, a much sharper opponent awaited the Atoms in the host team from Bloomington. Elizabeth Gagnon drew first blood scoring late in the first. Bloomington tied the game in the second. Ainsley Pare would make 14 saves preserving the tie.

Sunday’s games are to be determined.
