Coffey Wakes Up Sportop Queens' Offence

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB — On Day 2 of the Central Plains Capitals Showcase, the Sportop Midget AA Queens looked for their first “W” of the weekend taking on the Yellowhead Chiefs Saturday morning. The Chiefs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st but just as the period wound down and Yellowhead looked to take the lead into the intermission, the Queens scored 3 goals in rapid succession. First, Kendra Fortin would get the puck up to Sibley Duckert who’d setup Olivia Cava for Thunder Bay’s opening goal with 1:46 left in the first. Then 54 seconds later, Reese Coffey assisted on Alexis Paddington’s tying goal and then just 36 seconds later, Brenna Nicol scored to give the Queens the lead with Paige MacLeod and Coffey drawing assists.

In the second period, the Midget AAs extended their lead. Olivia Nicholl’s pass would lead to Paddington’s second goal of the game and then Coffey scored on a play from Fortin. Yellowhead managed a lead-cutting goal in the second and another in the third but Nicol would put it out of reach with the Queens 6th goal in a 6-4 win. Reese Coffey drew another assist on the late goal, her 4th point of the game.

The Queens wouldn’t fair as well in their second game of the day, losing 2-0 to the Westman Wildcats.

On Sunday morning, the Queens finish up against the Interlake Lightning at 9:15 AM.
