Midget A/AA Queens vs Gentry Academy U16/U19

THUNDER BAY, ON — Friday night, the Queens/Gentry exhibition series got started with a couple games.

The Sportop Midget AA Queens hosted the U19 team from Gentry Academy all weekend. On Friday night, Kailey Swerhun opened the scoring on a play from Reese Coffey and Darbie Mattson but Gentry responded just 2:05 after. Coffey would then score, with Olivia Cava and Gaby Andreacchi drawing assists, to regain the lead. 2-1 after one. Gentry had a great second period scoring three unanswered goals. In the third Sibley Duckert setup Brenna Nicol who’d score and cut the lead to one but that’s as close as they’d get, losing 4-3.

Saturday morning, the AA Queens found themselves in a bit of a barn burner. After a tame 1-1 first period, the Queens managed a trio of goals: Two from Brenna Nicol and one from Olivia Nicholl but at the same time, Gentry managed 6 goals the 9-goal middle frame! In the third, the Queens tightened up. Kendra Fortin buried her second of the game to begin the mounting comeback and Sarah Grieve scored late in the third to bring it within reach at 7-6. In the dying seconds of the game, Reese Coffey found and setup Saige MacLeod would snap the puck home, tying the game at 7-7 with 12 seconds remaining. 14 goals would be the limit as the game went tied after 60 minutes.

In Game 3 on Saturday night, Gentry took an early 2-goal lead which Sarah Grieve responded to with a goal for the Queens from Cava and MacLeod. Unfortunately for the Midget AAs, after a scoreless second, Gentry Academy struck with 4 unanswered goals, taking the game by a score of 6-1.

On Sunday morning, the Sportop Queens looked for their first win of the weekend and they’d get off to a great start. Nicol and Coffey both potted first period goals to put the Queens up 2-0. A pair of goals from Gaby Andreacchi, followed by a snipe from Kendra Fortin gave the Queens a 5-0 lead early in the third. Gentry managed a late goal to spoil the shutout bid for Reese Keating.

The Gridlink Midget A Queens found themselves in a bit of a mismatch on the weekend, going 0-4 against Gentry U16 and being outscored 32-3 but lots of shots for the goalies and lots of defensive play reps are useful, especially this early in the season. Kaitlyn IntiniEmma Johnston and Victoria Arnone managed to get into the goals column for the Queens.

All in all, a great weekend of hockey. Gentry Academy donated thee bags of beanie babies to a local charity.
