Bantam AA Queens Excellent at 2 Nations

DETROIT, MI — This past weekend, the Bantam AA Queens were in Detroit for the 2 Nations College Prep series and really impressed.

Friday morning, the Bantam AA Queens got up to face the Philadelphia Jr Flyers to open the tournament. Both teams exchanged goals in the first with Riah Compardo scoring, assisted by Joanna Martinsen and Samantha Cicigoi. The second was more of the same with Philadelphia taking the lead and the Queens tying it back up as Compardo scored her second of the game, this time on the powerplay on a setup feed from Paige Broughton. In the third the Flyers once again took the lead. The Queens couldn’t find the equalizer this time however and the Flyers potted an empty net goal to hand the Queens a 4-2 loss.

That afternoon, the Queens had the St. Louis Lady Blues up next. It only took 19 seconds for Katy Lacosse to setup Makara Magbanua who’d snipe an early goal. The 1-0 lead lasted all the way to the third where the Queens would extend the lead as Magbanua this time setup Lacosse for a goal. The Blues scored their first soon after to bring it back to a one-goal game. Goalie Abby Wills held the lead and the Queens once again took a two-goal lead after Ella Mannila scored on the powerplay; Akira Tatebe and Caryss Kehl drew assists on the goal. 3-1 final.

On Saturday, the Queens met up with Team Wisconsin. After a scoreless first period, Joanna Martinsen opened the scoring for the Queens on a setup by Katy Lacosse. Wisconsin tied the game soon after and before the end of the period, took the lead 2-1 Wisconsin after two. The Queens pushed for the equalizer and it finally came with just 3:03 left when Paige Broughton sniped one past the Wisconsin netminder (assists to Ella Mannila and Caryss Kehl) and as the game looked to end in a tie, Riah Compardo would spoil it for Wisconsin, scoring with 43 seconds remaining. 3-2 Queens win.

That evening, the Queens met up with the Anaheim Lady Ducks. Queens goalie Abby Wills did her best keeping the game scoreless though two periods as the only goal came off the stick of Akira Tatebe who got setup on a breakaway by Mannila. Akira’s goal gave the Queens a 1-0 lead through two. In the third, Anaheim looked to get the equalizer on the powerplay but instead Lacosse would get the puck to Bridget Cameron who’s score shorthanded. And just 82 seconds later, the Queens struck again with Ella Mannilla scoring to give Thunder Bay a commanding 3-0 lead in the third. Queens goalie Abby Wills stopped 32 of 32 shots for the shutout, leading her side to victory.

Finally, on Sunday morning, the Bantam AAs were awarded a matchup against the Windsor Wildcats for 5th place (of 24 teams). Rhae Thomas potted a powerplay goal (assisted by Makara Magbanua and Avery Olenik) with four minutes left in the first while netminder Presley Brohm stopped everything she saw in a razor thin 1-0 win.

Queens Bantam AA manager Abi Sprakes described the weekend as amazing for the group citing it was a “team effort at every step”. The Queens finish with a 4-1-0 record, outscoring opponents 12-7.
