Sportop Midget AA Queens Win Con College Tournament Championship
THUNDER BAY, ON — After going 4-0 in the round-robin, outscoring opponents 22-1, it came down to two must-win games for the Sportop Midget AA Queens to take home the Confederation College Thunderhawks Invitational Tournament crown.
In the semifinals, the Queens took on the Manitoba Northstars. The Queens got off to a great start with Kailey Swerhun and Sarah Grieve setting up Brenna Nicol for the opening goal just 1:42 into the game. Grieve would then setup Swerhun on their next shift who’d increase the lead to two (Darbie Mattson also drawing an assist) and Saige MacLeod would add to the goals total giving her side a commanding 3-0 lead. The Northstars did manage a goal but it was quickly responded to by Reese Coffey, scoring just 23 seconds after. 4-1 after one.
The scoring dried up a bit in the second but Manitoba did manage another goal, cutting the lead to two. And in the third, Bantam AA call-up Joanna Martinsen scored for the Queens, one of her two points in the game, making it a 5-2 final.
In the finals, it’d be the LU Thunderwolves, who the Queens had previously edged out 2-0 in round-robin action, playing for the Championship. Gaby Andreacchi put the Queens on the board early in the first and Brenna Nicol would setup Saige MacLeod who’d score soon after to give the Queens a 2-0 edge after the first. In the second, Nicol buried a third goal for the Queens (Olivia Cava drawing an assist) but former Queen Mackenzie Lehto would get on back for the Thunderwolves to bring it to 3-1 but that is as close as Queens goalie Mykaila George would allow it as the Sportop Midget AA Queens skated to a 3-1 win, and winning their 5th consecutive Confederation College Thunderhawks Invitational Tournament Championship.
With Alexis Paddington and Olivia Nicholl both injured, Bantam AA call-ups Joanna Martinsen and Taylor Barenz also joined the Midget AA Queens.
