Gridlink Atom Queens Back On Top at Westfort Fall Classic

THUNDER BAY, ON — After losing in last year’s championship final of the Keating Westfort Fall Classic Tournament, the Gridlink Atom Queens were a team on a mission this weekend going 4-0 in the round-robin, outscoring opponents 25-0.

The Queens would defeat the Neebing Hawks in the Quarter-Finals 9-0 with goals coming from Morgan Barenz, Siena Ricciardi, Lily-Don Comeau, Kayla Grant, Vienna MinnelaAva Hrubeniuk (twice), and Olivia Vinet (twice). The Queens then went on to beat the Westfort Maroons in the Semi-Finals 7-0 thanks to twin hattricks from Vinet and Barenz, and a solo marker from Madelynn Moore.

In the Finals, the Queens took on the Dryden Blades and outshot them by a massive margin but Dryden goalie Zak Pyykkonen kept the game close with his spectacular play. Late in the third period, Olivia Vinet would finally solve the netminder, scoring on a play from Madelynn Moore. Then just 66 seconds later, Ava Hrubeniuk fed Shayla Stokaluk who’d score again for the Queens to extend the lead to two. Queens goalie Norah Traer, as she had all tournament, turned away every puck she saw and Kayla Grant added a late goal as the Atom Queens took the game 3-0, winning their second Westfort Fall Classic title in 3 years, and the 3rd title in  4 years by a girls team as the Thunder Bay Fury took the crown in 2016, one year before the institution of the Atom Queens team.
