Gridlink Atom Queens at Cake Eater Classic

EDINA, MN — The Gridlink Atom Queens are in Edina, Minnesota for the 15th Annual Cake Eater Classic. They opened up the tournament Friday afternoon against Wayzata and swarmed their opponent, outshooting Wayzata 10-1 in the opening period but only managed a single goal off the stick of Kaelyn Stansell who’d eventually bury a rebound off a Shayla Stokaluk shot. 1-0 after one. In the second, Stansell would do a good job on the forecheck leading to the puck arriving in the high slot right onto the tape of Ava Hrubeniuk who’d snipe the Queens’ second of the game, Kayla Grant was credited with an assist.

Down 2-0, Wayzata pressed hard in the third to tie the game. They’d score once after hunting down a rebound after a 2-on-1 to make it a one-goal game but the Queens would play some brilliant puck possession hockey, keeping the puck in Wayzata’s end, not allowing them to pull their goalie for the extra attacker. 2-1 final.

It’d be a quick turn-around to play their second game as the Atoms took on host Edina at 3:30pm. Edina opened the scoring late in the first but the Queens tied the game just 2:06 later when some nice checking from Paetyn Stansell and Lily-Don Comeau led to working a loose puck to Siena Ricciardi in the slot who’d score. 1-1 after one. The Queens found themselves in some penalty trouble in the second, needing to kill off an extended 5-on-3 and their best penalty killer, goalie Norah Traer was equal to the task, helping her team keep the game tied. After the kill, the Queens began to tilt the ice but couldn’t seem to find the game breaker at the other end as the two equally strength teams skated to a 1-1 tie.

Saturday, the Gridlink Atoms will play Mahtomedi at 8:15am, after which they’ll be seeded for their next opponent.
