Gridlink Atom Queens Earn Edina Gold

EDINA, MN — The Gridlink Atom A Queens are coming home with some ‘delicious’ championship gold from the Cake Eater Classic in Edina, Minnesota in a thrilling final game.

The Queens went 2-0-1 in the round-robin and narrowly edged out host team Edina in a tertiary tie-breaker (least goals allowed) to earn their birth in the Championship game against Osseo-Maple Grove (OMG).

Queens goalie Norah Traer played the role of game-stealer, holding OMG to a single goal through regulation while being outshot 17-6, which came off a 5-on-3 powerplay. After a giveaway in the offensive zone, Morgan Barenz tied the game in the second period for the Queens with a top corner snipe after a  play setup by Shayla Stokaluk. The third period evened out as the shots were three a side but the score remained 1-1. Traer needed to make an amazing glove save on a breakaway in the dying seconds of the game.

After a 4-on-4 overtime didn’t solve anything, the game went to a 3-player shootout. After a scoreless first round, Morgan Barenz once again sniped glove-side on the OMG goalie to put her side up 1-0. The second OMG shooter hit the crossbar on her chance, leading to Vienna Minnella opting for the deke, sliding the puck past the goalie and sealing the deal for the Queens.
