Gridlink Midget A Queens Flawless So Far in Chicago

CHICAGO, IL — The Gridlink Midget A Queens compete this week at the 2020 Chicago Girls Winter Classic in the U19-A division and started off strong against the Wyoming Selects. The opening period was tight as Thunder Bay outshot Wyoming 8-7 but both teams were held goalless.

In the second, the Queens finally broke the goose egg as Alessia Ricciardi put the puck onto the stick of Natasha Lawson who’d bury the game’s opening goal, and only goal of the period where the Queens flung 12 pucks at Wyoming’s net to their 7.

In the third period the Queens extend the lead after Bria Filice put home a setup feed from Haley Wrigley and on the powerplay, Captain Caitlyn McGuire found Emma Johnston alone in a dangerous spot who’d score to make it 3-0 Queens. Goalie Camryn Williams stopped all 20 shots she faced, leading the Bantam AAs to a 3-0 victory.

Game two, the Queens found themselves up against host Chicago Bruins. After edging Chicago in shots 8-7 in the period, neither the Queens nor the Bruins could find the back of the net. In the second, Emma Johnston popped in the first of the game, second goal in as many games, to give Thunder Bay a 1-0 lead. In third Kayla Stein extended the lead to two. Camryn Williams earned her second straight shutout stopping 25 shots en route to a 2-0 win.

The Queens face-off against the San Diego Jr Gulls Sunday at 10:30am. Sunday afternoon and Monday’s games are to be determined.
