Sportop Midget AA Queens Keep Lighting the Lamp at Female World Sport School Challenge

WINNIPEG, MB — Following up on their 8-0 win, the The Sportop Midget AA Queens looked to stay on a roll in the Female World Sport School Challenge, and they would against the Pilot Mound Buffaloes.

Brenna Nicol opened the scoring unassisted and Alexis Paddington followed up shortly after to make it 2-0 with Darbie Mattson drawing an assist. Before the first period closed, Sarah Grieve would get the puck over to Kailey Swerhun who’d score with one second left! 3-0 after one.

In the second, Jada LeBlanc and Reese Coffey’s unassisted goals just 9 kept the red light hot. LeBlanc and Gaby Andreacchi’s play with the puck would lead to finding Paddington in front who’d score her second of the game and Sarah Grieve finished up the scoring in the second with Nicol and Swerhun credited with assists. The Queens’ shutout bid would be spoiled with a single goal from Pilot Mound in the third. Nevertheless, a 7-1 win.

As well as the Queens had played (2-1 record, outscoring opponents 18-4), the one-goal loss left them playing for 5th place against the Rockey Mountain Raiders.

The Raiders scored 38 seconds in to put the Queens against the ropes and notched a second goal to make it 2-0. The Sportop Queens rallied with a powerplay goal off the stick of Brenna Nicol from Kendra Fortin and Alexis Paddington. In the second, Fortin tied the game after being setup by Nicol but Rocky Mountain regained the lead on the powerplay. The Raiders would get another powerplay early in the third but just 56 seconds into the period, Fortin would clear the puck up to Paddington who’d go in and score shorthanded to tie the game at three. Regulation time would come and go with no further goals as would overtime, so it went down to the shootout where Sarah Grieve ended up sniping the game winner. 4-3 final.
