Queens in Ottawa in search of provincial crowns

OTTAWA – The Thunder Bay Queens will be well represented this weekend in Ottawa as four of their clubs are in the nation’s capital vying for crowns at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships, which get underway today and run through Sunday.

The Sportop midget AA Queens, who will attempt to repeat as OWHA champions, are there while joining them in Ottawa are the Ontario Power Generation midget A, Taranis Contracting bantam AA and Triad Contracting peewee teams who are also on the quest for provincial gold.

A total of 24 teams will compete in the midget AA division with the Sportop Queens opening up against the St. Catharines Chaos at 2:30 p.m. today.

Game 2 of the day sees the Whitby Wolves next up in a match-up that features an 8 p.m. start.

They will then finish up round robin play Friday at 1:15 p.m. vs. the Markham-Stouffville Stars.

From there the Sportop side will look to advance to the playoff round, which begins Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile the OPG midget A Queens begin with a 12:15 p.m. encounter Thursday against the Belmont Blazers.

A second contest on the day features a game against the Nepean Wildcats at 8:45 p.m.

The Clearview Ice Cats meet Thunder Bay Friday at 1:30 p.m. to finish things off in the 20-team division.

Like the midget AA grouping, play in the medal round starts Saturday.

There are 24 squads competing in bantam AA with the Taranis Contracting Queens commencing competition at 2:45 p.m. with the Oakville Hornets serving as their opponent.

A second contest today has the club tangling with the Kingston Ice Wolves at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s lone encounter for the bantam AA side will them meet the Peterborough Ice Kats at 10:30 a.m. as they hope to be among the group that moves on to the playoff round that starts Saturday morning.

As for the Triad peewee Queens, they open up play today against the Kitchener Lady Rangers at 4:15 p.m.

They will then return to the ice Friday as they meet the West NorthHumberland Wild at 9:15 a.m.

The Whitby Wolves will provide the opposition in their final round robin contest, which goes Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

From there the top eight sides in the 16-team division will move on to the playoff round starting Saturday evening with quarter-final action.
