FCG Queens take series vs. Sault Ste. Marie

THUNDER BAY -- The Thunder Bay First Class Gas bantam AA Queens took a best-of-three series against the visiting Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats over the weekend winning two of the contests to sides played at local arenas.

Game 1 saw Thunder Bay blank the Wildcats by a 3-0 score, backed by the shutout goaltending of Alyssa Aho, at Current River Arena.

The Queens Emilie Varrin had the game-winner in the opening period on assists by Kaylee Grosjean and Danielle Saunders.

Jayda MacArthur added an unassisted effort in the middle frame while Vanessa Nicholl supplied some insurance in the third to round out the scoring.

Game 2 saw Sault Ste. Marie rebound by skating to a 4-2 triumph.

After the Wildcats opened the scoring, Thunder Bay responded with markers from MacArthur and Julia Siciliano to go up 2-1 after the first session in a game played at Port Arthur Arena.

The Sault answered back by tacking on two more in the middle stanza and one more in the third to pull out the victory.

Makenna Burke was in net for the Queens in that one.

In Sunday’s series decider Grosjean tallied twice and set-up two others to pace the club to a 4-1 triumph.

She had one and assisted on another by MacArthur to put the Queens up a pair heading into the second period.

Grosjean then finished off the work of Varrin and MacArthur to extend Thunder Bay’s lead.

Sault Ste. Marie would dash Burke’s shutout bid in the third, but the Queens added one from Siciliano to finish things up and win the overall series.

The Queens also played an exhibition game against the Thunder Bay Kings AAA peewee boys side on Saturday and dropped a 6-1 decision.

Madeline Browczuk had the lone goal for the team in that one assisted by Hannah Armstrong and Briana Prete.

The FCG Queens first tournament action of the season will be Oct. 18-20 as they travel to Windsor, Ont., to compete in the annual Hocktoberfest event.
