Queens Showcase Day 1 wrap

THUNDER BAY – Day 1 at the Thunder Bay Queens Showcase is in the books as the final two games in Friday's portion of round robin competition came to a close at Fort William First Nations Arena.

Day 2 action goes all-day Saturday with 11 games in total commencing with the Triad Contracting peewee Queens taking on the Duluth Ice Icebreakers at 10 a.m..

The peewee, bantam and midget finals then go Sunday at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.

Listed below are the final two Day 1 game re-caps along with all the results and schedule of upcoming match-ups:

GAME 9: Midget: Winnipeg East Saints 3 FCG Queens 1 – The Saints of Winnipeg East remained unbeaten at the Showcase as they upended the First Class Gas bantam AA Queens.

Emilie Masse paced Winnipeg with a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 4:55 to go in the opening period.

Alexi Cheveldayoff gave the Saints the lead at 9:37 of the opening stanza, which was followed by Masse’s first of the evening just 28 seconds later.

The score stayed that way until early in the third when Hannah Armstrong put the Queens on the board cutting their deficit in half.

Masse however added a power play marker three minutes later to give Winnipeg East some insurance as they held on for the victory.

Danielle Bonot-Schmidt picked up the win in net while Alyssa Aho suffered the loss.

GAME 10: Midget: Schreiber North Shore Stars 2 Thunder Bay Midget Fury 2 – The final game in Day 1 play at the Queens Showcase ended like the first one, in a tie.

Schreiber jumped out to a quick lead thanks to Dayna Foulds scoring 23 seconds after the opening face-off only to see the midget Fury responded less than a minute later on a Veronica Pellerin effort at 1:10.

Neither side would connect in the middle session, but Crystal Roen gave the Stars the lead again with 6:57 remaining.

The Fury came back again notching the equalizer in quick order on Pellerin’s second of the contest.
 
Callie Bevilacqua was in Fury net for the draw while Courtney Allaire did likewise for Schreiber.
