Peewee semifinals set at Queens Showcase

THUNDER BAY – The peewee semifinals are now set at the Thunder Bay Queens Showcase currently underway at Fort William First Nation Arena.

Following round robin play, which wrapped up Saturday morning, The Triad Contracting peewee Queens and Winnipeg East Saints finished tied for top spot with identical 2-0-1 records with Thunder Bay earning the higher seed by virtue of a better goals-for and against percentage.

That means the Queens will take on the No. 4 seed Fort Frances Nor-Fab Flames in one semifinal contest at 3:30 p.m. at FWFNA over on Rink No. 2 while Winnipeg meets the Duluth Icebreakers in the other at 4 p.m. on Rink No. 1.

The two semifinal winners will meet in Sunday’s peewee final starting at 8 a.m.

Listed below are the game results and recaps of the last two round robin games in the peewee division as well as the remaining schedule of contests at the Queens Showcase.

DAY 2 RECAPS (Saturday, Dec. 7) (After Game 12)

GAME 11: Peewee: Triad Contracting Queens 3 Duluth Icebreakers 0 – A perfect start to Day 2 at the Showcase for the peewee Queens as Josee Robinson posted the shutout over Duluth.

Thunder Bay received all the offensive production they would need in the opening stanza as Molly Kunnas notched the eventual game-winner three minutes in while she also set up Victoria Darosa, via the power play, at 5:43.

Mackenzie Lehto then added some insurance in the third period as she finished off the work of Darosa with 11:50 to go.

Carissa Mudrak was in net for the Icebreakers in the contest.

GAME 12: Peewee: Winnipeg East Saints 6 Fort Frances Nor-Fab Flames 0 – Like the opening contest on Day 2 at the Queens Showcase, the second game was also a shutout as Winnipeg East blanked Fort Frances.

The Saints took a 2-0 lead after one period on markers by Sydney Cancilla and Sarah Dennehy.

After a scoreless middle session the talented Dennehy notched her second of the day and seventh overall in three games to put the side from the Manitoba capital in control.

Winnipeg went on to add three more goals to wrap things up as Alyssa Gillan, Emily Rana and Taylor Wurich-Coombs all found the back of the net.

Rachelle Jeffrey was between the pipes for the Saints in posting the shutout while Ziggy Skead was solid in net for Fort Frances despite the outcome.
