Queens go 3-1-2 in tournament play Saturday

It was a fairly successful day for the three Thunder Bay Queens’ clubs competing in tournaments Saturday as they went a combined 3-1-2 in game action.

The RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens wrapped up play with a pair of victories at the Bauer World Hockey Invite taking place in Detroit, Mich.

They started with a 3-2 triumph vs. the Milwaukee Admirals before topping the Sarnia Lady Sting 4-2.

Against Milwaukee, Ellen Svane’s goal with 13:08 remaining proved to be the game-winner.

Carly Hennessey and Vanessa Nicholl also scored for Thunder Bay while Victoria Zieroth dished out a pair of assists.

Makenna Burke picked up the decision in net.

In the contest vs. Sarnia, Zieroth supplied the winner late in the second period to cap off an impressive day.

Brooke Herman, Lucy Newman and Molly Kunnas also found the back of the net with Karadyn Kiviaho, Dayna Doucet and Nicholl adding helpers.

Josée Robinson was stellar in net for Thunder Bay making numerous impressive stops, including a penalty shot, to secure the victory.

As for the Sportop midget AA Queens, they went 1-1 Saturday at the Shattuck-St. Mary’s Jamboree in Faribault, Minn.

They started with a 2-0 win over St. Francis of Xavier Academy of Edmonton before falling 3-1 to the Winnipeg Avros.

Versus St. Francis, Thunder Bay notched the eventual game-winner early in the middle stanza as Briana Prete finished off the work Kaitlin Howarth and Samantha Isbell.

Isbell then added some insurance with 9:51 remaining in the third to conclude the scoring.

Prete and Hannah Armstrong picked up assists on the play.

Bailey Chenier posted the shutout for the Queens.

In the loss to Winnipeg, Teresa Rogalinski notched the lone marker for her side while Fayth Chambers was solid making 28 saves in defeat.

Meanwhile the midget A Queens have advanced to the semifinals of the Confederation College Caribou Classic at 8 a.m. Sunday at Fort William First Nation Arena following three straight ties in round robin play.

They started with a 3-3 draw with the Northern Stars of Winnipeg in their opener.

Madeline Browczuk, Zoe Hynnes and Allison Pages all scored for Thunder Bay with Amanda Pages earning two assists.

Taylor Gombola was in net for her side.

Next up saw the Queens skate to a 1-1 against the L.U. Thunderwolves.

Montana Russo had the lone tally for the midget A squad while Cameron Ivall tended goal.

In their third contest of the tourney, Thunder Bay got a third period marker courtesy of Mikalya Sparks to pull out another 1-1 decision, this time with the Dryden Eagles providing the opposition.

Mary Flaherty set-up the Sparks marker and Gombola played in net for Thunder Bay.
