Midget Queens off to pair of tournaments

THUNDER BAY – Both the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA and the Goldcorp midget A Queens will be on the tournament trail in the U.S. this weekend.

The midget AA side heads to Rockville, Maryland to compete in the ninth annual Junior Women’s Hockey League Challenge Cup while the midget A’s travel to Madison, Wis., to take part in the CAN/AM Challenge Cup.

Game action for the Sportop Queens begins Saturday as they meet Detroit Belle Tire at 9:40 a.m.

That will be followed up with a 6:20 p.m. encounter later in the day vs. the Boston Shamrocks.

The Anaheim Lady Ducks will then face-off with Thunder Bay Sunday at 8:40 a.m.

A total of 12 teams are competing in the tourney with playoff round action starting Sunday afternoon while the teams still in contention play for medals on Monday.

As for the Goldcorp midget A side, they take to the ice twice Friday in Madison beginning with a 12:45 p.m. start vs. the Dallas Stars Elite.

Their second match-up of the day sees the St. Louis Lady Blues providing the opposition at 10:30 p.m.

Saturday has Thunder Bay tangling with Rocky Mountain Rough Riders from Colorado at 11 a.m. before finishing up against the Chicago Fury at 4:15 p.m.

A total of eight teams are competing in the event with the top two sides following round robin play slated to play in the championship game Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

The bronze medal contest featuring the third and fourth place clubs goes Sunday at 8:45 a.m.
