Goldcorp midget A Queens win opener in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – The Thunder Bay Goldcorp midget A Queens are off to a good start at the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Madison, Wis., after skating to a 4-1 victory over the Dallas Stars Elite Friday afternoon.

Allyson Lesperance paced the Thunder Bay attack vs. Dallas with a goal and two assists.

Lesperance and Amanda Pages helped set-up Delaney McLeod 3:14 into the contest to give the Queens the early lead.

After the Stars tied it three and a half minutes later, Jessie Page notched the eventual game-winner at 14:46.

Pages made it 3-1 with the lone tally of the middle session with Lesperance and Brenna Bohonos drawing helpers.

Lesperance then iced it with a third period marker as she buried a feed from Madisonlee Fullum at 6:30 to round out the scoring.

Thunder Bay outshot Dallas 28-14 in the contest with Cameron Ivall picking up the win in net.

The Goldcorp midget A’s return to action in Friday evening at 10:30 p.m. ET as they tangle with the St. Louis Lady Blues.

Saturday has the Queens taking on the Rocky Mountain Rough Riders of Colorado at 11 a.m. before finishing up against the Chicago Fury at 4:15 p.m.

A total of eight teams are competing in the event with the top two sides following round robin play slated to play in the championship game Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

The bronze medal contest featuring the third and fourth place clubs goes Sunday at 8:45 a.m.

Meanwhile the Sportop midget AA Queens will take to the ice twice Saturday to begin competition at the Junior Women’s Hockey League Challenge Cup in Rockville, Maryland.

They’ll meet Detroit Belle Tire at 9:40 a.m. followed by a 6:20 p.m. encounter later in the day vs. the Boston Shamrocks.

The Anaheim Lady Ducks will then face-off with Thunder Bay Sunday at 8:40 a.m.

A total of 12 teams are competing in the tourney with playoff round action starting Sunday afternoon while the teams still in contention play for medals on Monday.
