Goldcorp midget A Queens improve to 2-0 at CAN/AM Challenge Cup

MADISON, Wis. – A Lauren Lightbody goal two minutes into the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Thunder Bay Goldcorp midget A Queens edged the St. Louis Lady Blues 2-1 Friday evening in the final game of Day 1 play at the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Madison, Wis.

Zoe Hynnes staked Thunder Bay to the lead with 61 seconds left in the opening period with Amanda Pages and Caitlyn Arella picking up assists.

Lightbody put the Queens up by two early in the middle stanza as she finished off an unassisted effort.

St. Louis broke Taylor Gombola’s shutout bid with1:42 remaining, but the club held on from there to improve to 2-0 in the eight-team midget A division.

Gombola finished with 18 saves in the victory while the Queens put 15 shots on the Blues net.

The Goldcorp midget A’s return to the ice twice Saturday as they take on the Rocky Mountain Rough Riders of Colorado at 11 a.m. before finishing up against the Chicago Fury at 4:15 p.m.
