Goldcorp midget A Queens to play for bronze at CAN/AM Challenge Cup

MADISON, Wis. – The Thunder Bay Goldcorp midget A Queens will have to settle for an opportunity to win a bronze medal at the CAN/AM Challenge Cup in Madison, Wis.

After blanking the Rocky Mountain Rough Riders of Colorado 1-0 earlier Saturday improving to 3-0, the Queens dropped a 3-1 decision to the Chicago Fury in their final round robin contest.

They'll now meet the same Chicago side in the bronze medal game Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m.

Against Rocky Mountain, Vanessa Nicholl notched the lone goal of the game near the four-minute mark of the first period. Madisonlee Fullum picked up an assist on the play.

Taylor Gombola did the rest in net for the Queens stopping all 19 shots she faced to post the shutout.

Taking on the Fury, Chicago got goals 25 seconds apart in the opening period to get a lead they would not relinquish.

Allyson Lesperance brought Thunder Bay closer midway through the middle stanza as she finished off a feed from Zoe Hynnes.

The Fury answered that however with the game’s final tally in the latter stages of the frame to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured Chicago by a 22-16 count with Cameron Ivall suffering the setback.
